Plant photosystem … • Photosynthetic chemical activity takes place within plant organelles called chloroplasts. • Chloroplasts are present in leaves, green stems and unripe fruit. • Photosynthesis can only take place when chlorophyll is present in the chloroplasts. • Chlorophyll is the green coloring matter of leaves and plants, it is essential to the production of carbohydrates by photosynthesis
Changing Radiant energy to chemical energy … • Plants transform energy from the sun into chemical energy which can be transported and stored in plants. • Photosynthesis "fixes" carbon (from carbon dioxide in the atmosphere) into a solid form. • Photosynthesis produces oxygen as an important byproduct. • The major energy-yielding chemical produced by photosynthesis is glucose – a sugar or carbohydrate.

What is produced by photosynthesis? • Basic reaction: carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere plus water combine, in the presence of a radiant energy and chlorophyll, to form sugar (C6H12O6) and oxygen (O2). • Gasses are exchanged through the Stomata, small slits in the leaves and stems. • An estimated 620 billion tons of carbon are removed from the air by plants annually. • Photosynthesis is the primary source of oxygen worldwide. • What plant specifically produces the most O2?
Stages of photosynthesis: • The light reaction converts energy and releases oxygen. • The dark reaction takes in carbon from carbon dioxide, adds hydrogen, and forms carbohydrates using energy from the light reaction.
Products of photosynthesis: • Glucose converted to energy or other biochemicals including: • Sucrose • Starch – stored in plant cells, seeds, roots • Cellulose – used for plant walls • Fats and oils often stored in seeds • Combined with nitrogen and sulfur to form amino acids and then proteins
Factors affecting photosynthesis: • Light quality • Light intensity • Light duration • Carbon dioxide concentration • Temperature • Water availability
