  7. Terminology of a PCS* Plant System • (*) PCS = Process Control Systems A process control system controls a large scale plant such as power plants (thermal/coal/oil/gas/nuclear), oil refineries, onshore and offshore drilling stations, steel mills and many more other industrial processes. A PCS infrastructure consists the following elements: • Engineering Station • Maintenance Station • Operator Station • Route Control Station • BATCH Station • Terminal and Plant bus (Industry Ethernet) • Automation System • Peripheral devices (relay valves, actuators, sensors, …) NetApp Confidential - Limited Use

  13. What Is NERC? NERC's major responsibilities include working with all stakeholders to develop standards for power system operation, monitoring and enforcing compliance with those standards, assessing resource adequacy, and providing educational and training resources as part of an accreditation program to ensure power system operators remain qualified and proficient. NERC also investigates and analyzes the causes of significant power system disturbances in order to help prevent future events. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), a nonprofit corporation based in Princeton, NJ, was formed on March 28, 2006 as the successor to the North American Electric Reliability Council (also known as NERC). The original NERC was formed on June 1, 1968 by the electric utility industry to promote the reliability and adequacy of bulk power transmission in the electric utility systems of North America. NERC's mission states that it is to "ensure that the bulk power system in North America is reliable." NERC oversees eight regional reliability entities and encompasses all of the interconnected power systems of the contiguous United States, Canada and a portion of Baja California in Mexico. 14. What Is FERC? The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is the United States federal agency with jurisdiction over interstate electricity sales, wholesale electric rates, hydroelectric licensing, natural gas pricing, and oil pipeline rates. FERC also reviews and authorizes liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals, interstate natural gas pipelines and non-federal hydropower projects. NetApp Confidential - Limited Use

  15. System Cyber Security Monitoring - Why? • Industry / Energyinfrastructurs and their components are connected to the WAN • PCS* and ECS** systemsbased on IT standard hardware and software • Stuxnetwormwith a new methodology to attackspecialized automation systems • Cyber attacks to utilities services via LAN/WAN/Internet willincrease the nextyears • Utilities must protect all of the automation and control systems • Must meet the NERC/FERC critical infrastructure protection (CIP) regulationframework NetApp Confidential - Limited Use
