  1. Tenure & Promotion @ Georgia Tech:Process Overview New Faculty OrientationAugust 2013 Carole Moore, Ph.D. Assistant Vice Provost and Professor, HTS

  2. Overview • Reappointment, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) Overview & Milestones • Tips • Questions • Resources

  3. So, what you need to do to get tenure is…

  4. There is no formula, blueprint, or manual. • Every case is different • Every discipline is different GT Faculty Handbook Policy 19.2

  5. P&T Continuum… • No Publications, Grants • 1s and 2s on teaching evaluations • No service • N Publications, Grants • 4s and 5s on teaching evaluations • N service activities • Research/Scholarship • GT is a research institution, therefore must be successful in this area • Peer-reviewed journal articles; books; presentations at conferences; grants – awarded and proposals • Impact • Teaching • GT is a research institution, but teaching and student learning does matter! • Advising; new courses; innovations in teaching; redesigning courses; graduate theses advising • Service • Institute: faculty governance, committees • Department: faculty recruitment, seminars, meetings • Profession: participation in professional organizations • Community: memberships on local boards • Caveat – do not undertake Service contributions at the expense of Research and/or Teaching August 2013

  6. Hints • Use time wisely • Don’t say ‘yes’ to everything • Be selective • Be deliberate about your choices – volunteer for the committee that you want to serve on • Actively seek out mentors: different stages, disciplines, institutions • Collegiality is hard to quantify, but easy to identify • Learn good management techniques/get help when needed • Office of Human Resources • Faculty Affairs Office • Grants and Contracts

  7. Key Milestones in Tenure-Track Process • Annual Evaluations & Reappointments • Provides measurement of progress • Seek feedback from school chair • Mentors • Faculty member’s progress is reviewed solely by the unit level committee and/or school head; dean in unitary colleges • In most cases, first three reviews are administrative and will occur on the prescribed schedule regardless of any breaks in service

  8. Milestones Continued…Tenure • Tenure review • Timing • Earliest – 5 years (AY2017-2018) • Typical – 6 years (AY2018-2019) • Tenure represents the Institute's selection of a faculty member for a long-term commitment. Individuals are selected whose performance is outstanding and whose capabilities and interests, as manifested in performance, most closely support the objectives of the Institute, the college and the instructional unit. • All dimensions of the performance must be considered, that is teaching, creativity, and service. • In appraising a candidate's qualifications for tenure, the weightings of the three categories set forth above may vary with the individual case.

  9. Milestones Continued…Tenure • Extension to the Tenure Clock (a.k.a. stopping the clock) • Life happens… • Illness, childbirth, adoption, etc. • Institute approved break in service within the academic year • Decision should be made in consultation with the School Chair; requires Dean and President approval • If a faculty member stops his/her clock • Subsequent reviews will reflect the number of years in tenure track and not the total number of years • Additional requirements for tenure cannot be imposed • Make requests as far in advance as possible; not automatic • Depending on situation, Active Service Modified Duties may be an option

  10. Milestones Continued - Promotion • Promotion Review • Sufficient time in grade. Generally, five or more years in grade are expected (prior service if included in the offer letter); • Clear evidence of effective teaching; • Clear evidence of creativity while at Georgia Tech; and • Clear evidence of contributions to Georgia Tech in meaningful ways by service to the Institute, to the public, or to appropriate professional organizations.

  11. P&T Process - Timeline • May – Sept 2017 • Faculty candidate submits P&T paperwork (varies by school/college); external evaluation requests sent out by the department • Sept – Oct 2017 • Area & School Committees review completed package; goes to School Chair for review and vote • Oct – Dec 2017 • College Committee reviews package; goes to Dean for review/vote • Jan 2018 • Institute RPT Committee Meeting – Deans present candidate cases to Committee for discussion and vote • Jan/Feb 2018 • Provost reviews packages and votes; final decision made by President • March 2018 • PT outcomes distributed to faculty members via Deans/School Chairs

  12. P&T Package Contents • CV • 3-5 page accomplishments summary • Bio • 5 examples of scholarship • Evidence of teaching • CIOS Scores (Student Teaching Evaluations) • Peer Teaching Evaluations, if available • Cover Sheet • External Evaluation Letters • Area Committee Letter • School Committee Letter • School Chair Letter • College Committee Letter • Dean’s Letter Assembledby the candidate

  13. Tips for P&T • Have someone in your School who has served on a Dean’s committee look over your package • Make vitae easy to understand (use Institute format) – remember that faculty members from other disciplines will review your package • Take teaching evaluations seriously • Use CETL as a resource early on to improve/strengthen teaching, especially if you are having problems • Network at conferences • Insist on feedback and take it seriously • Avoid ‘urban legends’
