Metcalf Internship Program • Internship Program for undergraduate students • All internships are paid (minimum $10/hour) • Internships take place over the summer or during • the academic year • Provides students with substantive experience • Located all over the world in virtually all fields • 440 interns in 2011, 570 in 2012 and goal of 700 in • 2013!
Volunteer for the Metcalf Program by: • Offering Internships • Hosting or attending Metcalf Networking Events • (nationwide) • Giving to the program and supporting grants for • students • Volunteering as Application Reviewers (online) and • Candidate Interviewers (interviews are in Chicago in • winter quarter on Saturdays)
“UChicago Careers In” Pre-Professional Programs
UChicago Careers In Programs • Pre-professional programs with dedicated staff, advisors, programming and resources to help students with career interests in: • Arts • Business • Health Professions • Education Professions • Entrepreneurship • Journalism • Law • Public and Social Service • Science and Technology
Alumni can get involved with UCIs in all these ways and more! • Speak at programs • Offer fellowships and internships • Host events or treks • Review student application materials (resumes, cover letters and personal statements) • Support grants for research, arts and unpaid internships • Be a mentor or offer an externship
Treks • Groups of 10-15 students visit successful alums at their places of business • Trips planned by city and industry • Students pay transportation, but lodging, meals and activities are subsidized • You can volunteer to host a Trek, a Trek Reception or sponsor students’ travel
Alumni Board of Governors Externship Program • The Alumni Board of Governors Externship • Program is for 1st and 2nd year undergraduate • students • Students shadow professionals for 2-3 days over • Spring Break (March 25-29) and Winter Break • (December 17-21- new for 2012!) • 200+ externships offered nationwide • Students provide their own housing and • transportation • Professionals in all fields are welcome to host
The Graduate Externship Program is currently seeking funding to provide housing and transportation stipends to Graduate Externs so that the program can grow nationwide. Alumni support is needed. Graduate Externship Program The Graduate Externship Program is for MA and PhD students in the Divisions Students shadow alumni with advanced degrees for any 1-2 days during the spring and summer quarters Externships in any field
Program Growth • The program saw extraordinary growth in 2012, which includes increasing the number of unique externship opportunities, total student applications, and unique applicants. • 2012 Placement Data • 125 unique externship hosts • 187 placements • A 46% increase from our 2011 placements • 2012 Student Application Data • 291 applicants (up from 225 in 2011) • 64% of applicants were offered a position (up from 57% in 2011)
