Agenda 10/31/2012 Sponge Objective Intro: Symbolic Interactionism Modeling: Explain Skit IP: Skit and Quiz Review: Present Skits Exit Ticket
Sponge • What is symbolic interactionism?
While I am gone… • Study for quiz over sociologists and functionalist perspective
Objective SSSocFR3: Students will explain the major theoretical perspectives in sociology. a. Explain and apply the theoretical perspectives of Structural Functionalism, Symbolic Interaction, and Conflict Theory.
Symbolic Interactionism • A Micro Theory • Focuses on how we use symbols (e.g. language, images, etc.) to interact with others and create an understanding of reality. • Social constructions are ideas and symbols that are meaningful in a culture and help people understand the world around them. • Ex. Gender, shaking hands, the stock market
Symbolic Interactionism • We are constantly communicating with one another to create reality. • I’m only a teacher because you think I am. • This room is only a classroom, because we behave as though it is.
Questions to Ask • Look at the individuals who are interacting--they are doing something--who is doing what and HOW are they doing it? • What kinds of meaning can be attached to what is done? • Has anyone changed status as a result? • What messages are they conveying with the action? • How is a person representing him/herself to the world or the context we are examining?
Independent Practice • You and a partner will create a skit that has no spoken words. • The skit must be no longer than 5 minutes long. • You must convey a message to the audience without speaking.
Ticket Out the Door • How is functionalism different than symbolic interactionism?
