Plato’s Cave By Rafaela Pelegrina
Who was the genius behind it? • Plato was a Greek philosopher who tired to find what were the limits of our knowledge. • He was a pupil of Socrates, who continued the work of his master after Socrates passed away. • He believed that humans lived in two separate worlds: the visible and the intelligible (or invisible). • Visible: What we see, physical things • Intelligible: Anything that comes from reason (mathematic equations and abstract definitions)
So what really is the Cave? • The cave is what people are trapped in until they can see (and understand) things with perfect clarity or passing from the Visible World to the Intelligible World. • In other words, the Visible World is a lie. While, the Intelligible World is true knowledge, true belief and once you get to that level of thinking then you can see everything as it really is. • Is there more to life that just what we see?
Questions • When you think of a person, you imagine their physical features, but is that really them? Are they really just that kid with a quirky personality? • What if they were born with different features, would they still have the same personality? • Are you really you? Or are you something else? Something more? Are you a reflection of your soul? Or are you just something that carries a soul? • Is the soul your true self? Are you just an image for the soul to use? Just a bunch of meaningless matter? • And what IS the soul? Is it your personality? Your true knowledge? Your inner peace? Will we ever know? • Will we ever be able to leave the shadows and see the light of pure clarity?
