Advanced Placement/Honors Program Waubonsie Valley High School 8th , 9th , 10th , and 11th Grade Parent Informational Meeting January 17, 2012
What’s different? • There will be more individual work • There is work to be completed outside the school day • There may be course work over the summer • May have more than 1 test in a school day • Higher expectations • Students will need the skill of abstract reasoning • Students truly need to answer the question “Are they ready?”
Parents questions . . . Should my freshman take honors courses?? Make your decision after you have asked yourself these questions: • Is my child comfortable with difficult school work ? • How many activities is my child involved in? • How does my child handle stress? • Is my child highly organized? • Is this what my child wants to do?

Current Research • Students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely to complete a college degree in four years. • AP course experience favorably impacts admissions decisions at 85% of selective colleges and universities. • 31% of colleges and universities factor a student’s AP experience into decisions about which students will receive scholarships. • More research at www.collegeboard.org/research
The AP Exam • Compiled by the College Board • National Exams administered in May- $87 fee per exam • Graded by college and high school faculty during the summer • Not required - but strongly suggested • Can take the exam without taking the course
