  3. Transition For parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), the transition to adulthood can bring to mind feelings of uncertainty and fear. Transition to adulthood is an ongoing process that should begin on the day of diagnosis and evolve throughout the course of the child’s life. Because individuals with ASD’s all function at different levels and will require varying degrees of care, it is critical to consider function over IQ when providing services to this population.

  4. Single Point of Entry • To stream line all processes • For the entire ASD population in the state of Massachusetts • To be set up upon diagnosis when entering the service system

  5. Transition Planning • There are many needs for transition planning: • Transition training for schools • Education and training for parents • Better coordination/collaboration between schools and agencies • Better cohesion & flow of currently fragmented services • More Job training/job development • Better focus on function over IQ so that the full spectrum of people with ASDs are included

  6. Focus on best practices • The committee developed a list of schools/programs • 18 schools were contacted • Patterns, consistencies and omissions will be evaluated • Recommendations will be made

  7. Thank You!
