Mummification In this section, you will learn about how the ancient Egyptians prepared the bodies of the dead for the Afterlife. Home Next
Mummification First: • The body is taken to an “ibu” (a tent where the embalmers mummify the body of the dead). • There the body is washed with palm wine and rinsed with water from the Nile River. Back Home Next
Mummification Next: • The internal organs are removed through a cut on the side of the body. • The internal organs are packed in natron which will dry them out. • The heart is not taken out of the body because it will be needed in the Afterlife. Back Home Next
Mummification Next: • The body is covered and stuffed with natron which will dry it out. • After forty days, the body is washed again and covered with oils to help the skin stay elastic. Back Home Next
Mummification Then: • The dehydrated internal organs are wrapped in linen and returned to the body. • Finally, the body is covered with pleasant-smelling oils. Back Home Next
Mummification Note: • In the past, when the internal organs were removed from a body they were placed in hollow canopic jars (shown to the left). • Later, embalmers began returning internal organs to bodies after being dried in natron. Back Home Next
Mummification Finally: • The body is wrapped in linens. • Now, the body is ready for its journey through the underworld. • There, the heart will be judged by his good deeds on earth. Back Home Next

Gods and Goddesses Thoth • Thoth was the god of writing and knowledge. • The Egyptians believed he gave them the gift of hieroglyphics. Appearance: • Man with the head of an ibis. Back Home Next
The Afterlife In this section, you will learn about the Afterlife and the journey Egyptians believed the dead took to get there. Home Next
The Afterlife • To get to the Afterlife, Egyptians believed that one must pass through a treacherous place known as the underworld. • Here, they would face evil monsters, snakes, and fire pits. Back Home Next
The Afterlife • These evils could be overcome by the right spells. • Egyptians often wrote down the spells on paper and left them in or near the coffin of the dead. Back Home Next
The Afterlife • The greatest test of all was the Hall of Two Truths. • The heart was weighed against the Feather of Truth. (It was believed to hold all the sins and lies of the dead person.) Back Home Next
The Afterlife • The 3 great gods, Osiris, Anubis and Thoth, decided the result of the weighing. • If the heart passed the test, the dead person was allowed to enter the gates of “Yaru” (The Afterlife). • If the heart failed, then it was eaten by a terrifying monster known as the devourer.
