  2. Mummification In this section, you will learn about how the ancient Egyptians prepared the bodies of the dead for the Afterlife. Home Next

  3. Mummification First: • The body is taken to an “ibu” (a tent where the embalmers mummify the body of the dead). • There the body is washed with palm wine and rinsed with water from the Nile River. Back Home Next

  4. Mummification Next: • The internal organs are removed through a cut on the side of the body. • The internal organs are packed in natron which will dry them out. • The heart is not taken out of the body because it will be needed in the Afterlife. Back Home Next

  5. Mummification Next: • The body is covered and stuffed with natron which will dry it out. • After forty days, the body is washed again and covered with oils to help the skin stay elastic. Back Home Next

  6. Mummification Then: • The dehydrated internal organs are wrapped in linen and returned to the body. • Finally, the body is covered with pleasant-smelling oils. Back Home Next

  7. Mummification Note: • In the past, when the internal organs were removed from a body they were placed in hollow canopic jars (shown to the left). • Later, embalmers began returning internal organs to bodies after being dried in natron. Back Home Next

  16. The Afterlife • To get to the Afterlife, Egyptians believed that one must pass through a treacherous place known as the underworld. • Here, they would face evil monsters, snakes, and fire pits. Back Home Next

The Afterlife • The 3 great gods, Osiris, Anubis and Thoth, decided the result of the weighing. • If the heart passed the test, the dead person was allowed to enter the gates of “Yaru” (The Afterlife). • If the heart failed, then it was eaten by a terrifying monster known as the devourer.
