Self Powered Wireless Sensor Network for HVAC System Energy Improvement - Towards Integral Building Connectivity Jorge Berzosa • IoTWeek 2014 – London, June 19th
Objectives • Efficiency improvement of both used and newly installed HVAC systems through thermal simulations of the HVAC system and continuous real time comparison between measured and simulated outputs • Self Powered Multi Magnitude Wireless Sensor Network (SP-MM-WSN) • Cost effective and maintenance free wireless technology IoTWeek2014 – London, June 19th
Deployments • Two different real environments: • Apartment building:temperature sensors in three buildings distributed in apartments located in different floors • Office building:temperature sensors, PIR sensors and actuators for HVAC control IoTWeek2014 – London, June 19th

Office Building IoTWeek2014 – London, June 19th
Communications • Security • Privacy, confidentiality • Integrity • Reliability • Retransmission • Temporal • Spatial (channel-hop) • QoS, adaptability • Coexistence, interferences IoTWeek2014 – London, June 19th
Installation The device deployment should take into account: • High light levels to provide the necessary power • Sensor measurement conditions • Distance between devices, obstacles and materials • Not in areas where the sensors can be damaged accidentally/easily • Interference of job/daily activities of the workers/users • Not visible or aesthetically appealing • User motivation IoTWeek2014 – London, June 19th
Power Harvesting Social Implications • Federated Networks deployed over unfederated spaces. • Mesh networks rely on the availability of different nodes. If some critical nodes ‘die’ the reliability of the full network could be affected • PH-based systems: autonomous but a minimum ‘care’ or ‘environmental conditions’ are needed • Clarify if users’ behaviour could be influenced and altered to take care of the surroundings technologies, technologies that need special conditions to work properly IoTWeek2014 – London, June 19th
