  1. A German ScienceGateway for Cross-Searching Dispersed Digital Resource Collections

  2. Introduction • Vascoda is a new portal for scientific information • Central access point for all fields of science (not all subjects included yet) • Allows interdisciplinary searches as well as (in a later version) complex navigation and browsing

  3. The Idea behind Vascoda • Vascoda facilitates access to quality information • Offers access to all types of documents: born-digital as well as digitised and print materials can be obtained either free of charge or through pay-per-view options • Includes full-texts, link-collections, bibliographic and other databases, subject-specific search engines and more

  4. Sponsors and Institutions Involved • Sponsors: BMBF (Federal Ministry for Education and Research) DFG (German Research Foundation)   • Institutions:More than thirty German institutions - with co-operation partners worldwide – are working together to offer users an actual one-stop-shop for all scientific information. The partners of this project are libraries as well as information centres and other institutions providing quality academic information.

  5. The Partners • The Information Alliance (4 individual projects) • Virtual Libraries (23 individual projects) • EZB - Electronic Journals Library

  6. Partners of the Information Alliance • GetInfo, InfoConnex, EconDoc, MedPilot • Focus on providing digital full-texts, published materials and grey literature • Combine the search results of databases with the electronic full-texts provided either by publishers, grey-literature- or preprint-servers etc.

  7. Virtual Libraries • Offer access to information and documents relevant for research in a specific field of study • Integrate searching and the delivery of documents - stored and scattered around the world • Cover electronic as well as printed material • 23 individual Virtual Libraries, 15 are already online

  8. Anglo-American Culture (SUB Göttingen) Business (USB Köln) and Economics VWL (ZBW Kiel) Contemporary Art (SLUB Dresden) Dutch Culture (ULB Münster) Engineering (TIB Hannover) Ethnology (HU Berlin) Geo-Sciences (Göttingen) History (BSB München, SUB Göttingen, HU + StaBi Berlin) Ibero-America (IAI Berlin) Law (StaBi Berlin) Medicine (ZBMed Köln) Middle East (ULB Halle) Pharmacy (UB Braunschweig) Physics (TIB Hannover) Politics and Peace (SUB Hamburg) Psychology (SULB Saarbrücken) Romanic Languages (Bonn) Social Sciences (IZ Bonn) Veterinary Medicine (BTiHo Hannover) Wood-Technology (Dresden) Virtual Libraries - Partners

  9. EZB - Electronic Journals Library • Offers an effective use of academic journals found on the internet • Offers fast, structured and standardized access to scientific and academic full text journals • Contains 16,470 titles, among them 1,882 online-only journals, covering all subjects • 5654 journals can be read free-of-charge • The participating libraries offer full text access to the journals they subscribe to

  16. Standardization Document Types • monographs • journal articles • preprints, reports, conference proceedings, manuals, statistics, • websites …  a huge effort needs to be taken to standardize metadata

  17. Standardization Metadata Before vascoda • members of the information alliance agreed on a minimum standard of four metadata-fields • while the Virtual Libraries agreed on the VLib-Application Profile based on Dublin Core.[1] • Problem: a certain amount of the metadata is created and delivered by different publishers. A lot of work still needs to be done to find solutions … [1] http://bibliotheksdienst.zlb.de/2002/02_01_03.pdf
