  3. Today we are looking at two types of competition: Interspecific and Intraspecific • Success criteria • Be able to define each one. • Be able to explain the difference between the two. Energy in Ecosystems

  4. Competition • When does competition occur? • When organisms require the same or similar resources • What type of resources do organisms compete for? • Light, water, food, space, reproductive mates • Competition can be either Interspecific or Intraspecific. Energy in Ecosystems

  5. Interspecific competition • This occurs between members of different species in an ecosystem who require similar resources. • Examples are red/grey squirrels, brown/rainbow trout • The organisms require similar but not exactly the • same resources. Energy in Ecosystems

  6. Intraspecific competition • This occurs between members of the same species in an ecosystem who require the same resources. • Examples are robins in a garden or rabbits in a field. • This is often more intense as the same resources are • needed. Energy in Ecosystems
