Topic Map:What it is? Topic Maps is a standard for the representation and interchange of knowledge, with an emphasis on the findability of information.
A topic map represents information using Topics, representing any concept, from people, countries, and organizations, Associations, representing hypergraph relationships between topics, and Occurrences representing information resources relevant to a particular topic.

Topic Map Figure 1: Client CmapTools saves and retrieves Cmaps from a Place (CmapServer)
Topic Map Fig shows CmapTools clients and CmapServer running on the same LAN: the clients find the Place via broadcast
Topic Map Fig shows four CmapServers reporting to a Directory of Places. Notice that the Directory of Places does not store any Cmaps. All it keeps is information about the CmapServers that are up and running and that have reported to it
Topic Map Figure shows CmapTools client contacts the Directory of Places to obtain a list of CmapServers, and then contacts each Place separately
Topic Map The CmapTools user on the left accesses the LAN server (Students Cmaps) while the other user accesses Students Cmaps and the Private Place Science Cmaps.
Topic Map A CmapTools user takes advantage of the three mechanisms to locate Places (broadcast,Private Places and Directory of Places) to access Cmaps from a variety of CmapServers.
Topic Map Figure : Cmap Servers periodically send copies of their Indices to the Index Server
Topic Map Fig: Directory of Places may be configured to replicate, making it indifferent which Directory of Places a CmapServer or IndexServer registers with.
Topic Map Fig: Cmap Tools client accessing various CmapServers located via the replication of the Directories of Places
Topic Map Fig: Two scopes (shown as green and orange) allow the users at the left and right to access different networks, while the user in the middle to access both networks. The “Public Cmaps” Place is part of both scopes.
Topic Map Fig: Learning can vary from hightly rote to highly meaningful. Creativity results from very high levels of meaningful learning.
Topic Map Fig: The whole spectrum of learning activities can be integrated using CmapTools, incorporating various learning activities recorded via the software creating a digital portfolio as a product of the learning.

Topic Map Download IHMC CmapTools The IHMC CmapTools program empowers users to construct, navigate, share and criticize knowledge models represented as concept maps. It allows users to, among many other features, construct their Cmaps in their personal computer, share them on servers (CmapServers) anywhere on the Internet, link their Cmaps to other Cmaps on servers, automatically create web pages of their concept maps on servers, edit their maps synchronously (at the same time) with other users on the Internet, and search the web for information relevant to a concept map. • The IHMC CmapTools client is FREE for use by anybody, whether its use is commercial or non-commercial Click web: http://cmap.ihmc.us/download/index.php
Topic Map History Topic maps were originally developed in the late 1990's as a way to represent back-of-the-book index structures so that multiple indexes from different sources could be merged. The first edition of ISO 13250 included an interchange syntax based on SGML and the hypermedia linking language known as HyTime. The second edition, published in 2002 [1], added an interchange syntax based on XML and XLink.
Topic Map Further stated, Topic Maps is a standards-based technology and model for organizing and integrating digital information in a range of applications and domains. Drawing on notions adapted from current discourse theory, this article focuses on the communicative, or explanatory, potential of topic maps.
