Food • They hunted deer, bear, elk, mountain goats. They fished for plentiful salmon, whales, and seals.
SHELTER • Northwest Native Americans lived in something called plank houses. Plank houses are made primarily from large wooden boards from the giant cedar trees. Each house was made by placing the wood on poles. Totem poles stood in front of the plank house and told about the family inside.
Clothing of the Northwest Native Americans • The Northwest Indians made shirts out of shredded cedar bark. The Tlingit loved jewelry and wore necklaces, bracelets, anklets, and headbands. They made blankets called chilkat blankets out of goat wool and cedar bark woven together. The cedar bark was plentiful and was also waterproof.
Important Facts • The Northwest Indians were rich in natural resources. To show great wealth and importance, chiefs would throw a potlatch. They would spend all year making gifts like canoes, shields, clothing, and totem poles. At the potlatch they would give these gifts away. If anyone wanted to show that they were more important, they would have to have a potlatch and give away even more gifts!
