  1. Bible Teaching that Matters Preserving the faith from error

  2. Headings for Tonight • Introduction and reminder of previous subjects this month • What is “the faith”? • How can we define “error”? • What Christ & the Apostles say about “preserving the faith” • Preserving the faith today, in practical terms

  3. Introduction and reminder of previous subjects this month • Our overall heading for March is “Bible Teaching that Matters” • Why does Bible teaching matter? • Because it is THE WORD OF GOD! We are looking at certain vital matters of Bible teaching This month:- • The importance of having beliefs based upon revealed truth (March 3rd) • The need for repentance and baptism (March 10th) AND TONIGHT, • Having found the faith, the vital need to preserve it!

  4. What is the faith? • In essence, we can say (to use the words of Acts 8:12) that the faith (or the Gospel) consists of: “Good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ” (ESV) The kingdom of God.. • … is the kingdom of Israel, God’s kingdom in the past which Christ is heir to (Luke 1:32). • When restored, at Christ’s return, that kingdom will have a worldwide dominion (Daniel 2:44) The name of Jesus Christ.. • …means Saviour Anointed. He became our Saviour through his atoning sacrifice for sin. He is Israel’s Anointed king, heir to the kingdom of God.

  5. How can we define “error”? • It may be unpalatable to many, but… • In scripture, there is truth and there is error • The Psalmist wrote this: Ps 145:18-20 The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. 19 He fulfils the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them. 20 The Lord preserves all who love him, but all the wicked he will destroy. ESV

  6. How can we define “error”? • The Apostle John had this to say: 1 John 4:6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. • Christ said this in John 17:3-4,16-17 this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent…They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

  7. Christ said:

  8. What Christ & the Apostles say about “preserving the faith” • Have a look at what the Apostle Paul warns of: Look up Acts 20:17-31 Look up Galations 1:1-2,6-9 • Turn on to some words of James James 4:1-4 A warning against the influence of the world at large • See what the Apostle Peter has to say. Look at • 2 Peter 1:2-4, 20-21; 2:1-3

  9. What Christ & the Apostles say about “preserving the faith” • We see that all the Apostles warned about a great departure from sound doctrine and practice, which was to begin immediately after they left the scene. • What about the solution to this problem? • What did the Apostles have to say about that? Have a look at some words of Jude (a half-brother of Jesus): Jude 3-4 (again a warning), now vs.20-23 • Jude counsels a positive approach • How about Paul? Ephesians 6:10-18

  10. In this analogy, we see offensive as well as defensive weapons

  11. Preserving the faith today, in practical terms • “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17 ESV) • All of those spiritual qualities we saw in the ‘soldier’ analogy derived from the Word of God: • It is clearly vital to read the Bible, regularly, systematically, from cover to cover. • Not just to read it (with an open mind), but to compare scripture with scripture, so that we can “rightly divide it” (2 Timothy 2:15) • Earlier in this series, we saw the importance of regular prayer • We must put our faith into practice, beginning with a determination to change (repent) our lives and to be baptised.

  12. Preserving the faith today, in practical terms • We must continue to live the truth in our lives • Strive to develop godly qualities: virtue, righteousness, love for others, service to our lord, etc. • When new ideas or doctrines come along, compare them with the Word of God to decide whether they are true or false. • Seek the company (fellowship) of those who also hold true faith. Good company will support our faith: bad company can ruin it.

  13. Preserving the faith today, in practical terms May God bless our efforts to get to know, understand and obey the truth of the Gospel!
