Kamchatka Peninsula(Russia) • Shiveluch • Kizimen • Klyuchevkaya • Bezmianny
The Kamchatka volcanoes such as the Shiveluch, Kizimen, Klyuchevkaya, and Bezmianny recently show signs of volcanic activity.
Shiveluch • The 1300 km shiveluch is one of the Kamchatka's largest and most active volcano structures. • The 65000 year old starry shiveluch is truncated by a broad 9 km wide late Pleistocene caldera breached to the south. Many lava domes surround its outer flanks. • At least 60 large eruptions of shiveluch have occurred during the Holocene making it the most vigorous andesitic volcano of the kuril Kamchatka's arc. Tephra layers from these eruptions have provided valuable time markers for dating volcanic events in Kamchatka. • The activity of the volcano could affect international and low-flying aircraft.
Kizimen • Stratovolcano • Similar to Mount St. Helena • Overlapping lava domes blocky lava flows • Explosive eruption 1100 years ago produced a lateral blast and created 1.0 x 0.7 km wide crater breached to the north east inside which a small lava dome has grown • Weak seismicity of the volcano was registered. A moderate gas-steam activity and incandescence above the lava flow and crater were observed. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano.
Kliuchevskoi • Highest and most active volcano • Origin 6000 years ago • Beautifully symmetrical • 4835 m high basaltic stratovolcano • Explosive and effusive eruptions
Bezymianny • Smaller • Origin of 4700 years ago over Pleistocene lava dome complex • Similar to Mount St. Helena large crater that formed by collapse of the summit and an associated lateral blast. • Intermediate explosive activity and pyroclastic flows • Seismicity of the volcano was low. Satellite data showed the volcano was hard to see from the clouds.
