  2. Objectives • The student will identify cause-effect relationships. • The student will use cause-effect to track plot events. • The student will visualize plot events to identify cause-effect relationships.

  3. A cause is an event that makes something else happen. • If a dog eats your sandwich, • (cause)

  4. An effect is an event that happens because of an earlier action or experience. • you won’t have anything for lunch. (effect)

  5. Clue words for cause and effect relationships are: • Because • So • Then • Since These clue words help the reader to determine cause and effect relationships.

  6. Miguel’s Neighbors • Cause • Becky wears a white sweater. • Effect • It’s hard to see Becky. • She blends in with the sheep.

  7. Miguel’s Neighbors Cause • Mrs. Prouty says, “Pardon me,” before she sneezes. Effect • Mrs. Prouty seems very polite.

  8. Miquel’s Neighbors Cause • Stargazer speaks softly. Effect • Stargazer is mellow and quiet.

  9. Miguel and Tia Lola Cause • Miguel wants to do something special to make Tia Lola feel welcome. Effect • Miguel draws the Spanish word for “welcome” in the snow.

  10. Miguel and Tia Lola Cause • Miguel feels like an artist • as he draws in the snow. Effect • Miguel thinks of his father, who is an artist.

Effect • Tia Lola does not want to leave her room.

  13. What causes Tia Lola’s beauty mark to appear on the left side of her face at the end of the story? (p. 80) Cause • Miguel announces there is a surprise for his aunt in the back yard. Effect • Miguel sees the color comes back to Aunt Tia’s face, • the sparkle returns in her eyes, and • the beauty mark spreads to both sides of her mouth.
