Causes • Previous Injury to a Bone in the Leg • Bone Infection (in children/infants) • Bone Disease • Neurofibromatosis (genetic - disrupts nerve cell growth and causes bone deformities) • Multiple hereditary exostoses(rare - bone spurs) • Ollierdisease - rare nonhereditary sporadic disorder – develop cartilaginous tumors near growth plate • Others (inflammation arthritis and neurologic conditions)
Treatment • Mild – orthopedic shoes • Nonsurgical treatment is preferred because many times the risks of surgery outweigh the benefits • Severe – surgery (external fixator) • The bone may lengthen 1 millimeter per day, or approximately 1 inch per month
