Back to School NightOpen House Mrs. Kellen Wesson
Getting to know Mrs. Wesson • This is my 3rd year here at Grafton • The past two years: I taught Adv. Alg & ISL • This year: I will teach Adv. Alg, Algebra, & ISL • I recently got married this summer, I was formally Ms. Hancock • My students typically refer to me as “the Kindergarten teacher” • I am most known for my unique “spiral testing method” and my notes packets.
Supplies • Textbook & Book Cover • PENCILS ONLY • Eraser • Graph Paper • Loose Leaf • For homework students may use loose leaf or graphing paper • Graphing Calculator (no TI 30 or 89 & no Casio) • 1 ½ - 2 ”, 3 Ring Binder • 5 Tabs • notes packet, HW, review/test, MQ, handouts
Attendance • If absent, you are responsible for making up all missed assignments. • getting the class notes/handouts from a classmate or off the class website. • School related activities (field trips; athletics…) are NOT reasons for LATE assignments. • Assignments must be turned in PRIOR to the absence. • YOU are responsible for letting me know of any preplanned absences. • By email • Tardiness will not be tolerated. After two tardies, you will serve a detention with me at 7:00 a.m. • Any students more than one minute late to class WITHOUT a signed pass from a teacher or email, is considered tardy. • The office will handle chronic tardiness.
DAILY WORK (HW) • Yes, homework will be assigned DAILY. • Homework will count as part of the quarter grade and is crucial to your learning, no sympathy will be given for failure to do homework. • No credit will be given for late assignments. • All work must be done in PENCIL with the correct content heading. Absolutely no pen will be allowed unless specified. • Any assignment or test done in pen will merit no credit and result in a zero. • Unless otherwise directed, all problems should contain some thought process on paper (aka SHOW WORK) in an organized manner. I must see some organized though process to award credit. • Assignments will be checked and corrected daily. • Homework will be turned in at the end of the chapter and will be graded more closely based on completion, accuracy, and effort. • Three points will be awarded if the assignment is completed on time with all work shown. • One point will be given if the assignment is missing one of the criteria for a “quality” assignment. • No credit will be given to any incomplete or unfinished assignments. • Binders will be checked periodically for organization and neatness.
Mini Quiz (MQ) • A mini-quiz, typically 5-10 points, may be given periodically through out the week. • Mini-quizzes are unannounced and cover material from class or your notes. • Typically problems are taken from homework assignments or vocabulary and notes directly from the textbook. • Your cumulative mini quizzes grade will be included in your quarter grade.
Participation • Participation grade will be included in your quarter grade. • Optional monthly trivia questions & mind benders • help boost or improve your participation • Also email me questions & comments regarding class and the concept material we cover if you do not feel comfortable taking with me during class • Mandatory test reflections which will be submitted through email • Your readiness to begin class when the bell rings. When you come in to class, I expect three things from you: • you need to be in your seat • you need to have your homework assignment out on your desk ready to be corrected • you have your book out on your desk, open to last night’s homework assignment, ready to check your assignment. • Participation is a reflection of your efforts to learn the material in or outside of class. • Participation also plays a big factor into helping bump your grade up when you are on the “bubble” at the end of a quarter or semester. • Participation can only help improve your understanding of the class and material.
Testing • Testing in this course will be conducted by a method called SOS (Spiral of Success). • Tests will be held weekly. • Tests will be scrolled and always involve three parts: • Part C Current materials (40%) • Material learned during the current week since last week’s test • Part B Last week’s materials (30%) • Part A Material from 2 weeks ago (30%)
Testing cont. • Lowest test grade will be dropped, at the end of each quarter, if all tests are taken on time. • Any test missed due to absence of any kind (max of 1) will become dropped tests. • Make-up window for a missed test: • The day of the test until 7:30 am on the second day following the test. • The window closes when the 1st hour bells rings that morning. • Example: If you are unexpectedly absent on Friday, you may just come to my room Monday or Tuesday morning at 6:45 to take it. No appointment necessary. Once the bell rings for 1st hour on Tuesday morning though, the window closes and your test will be graded as is. • If you do not make-up a test during that time frame, test will count as drop grade • If you miss a test, due to vacation, test will count a drop grade. • All tests will be returned no more than two days after the test is taken. • A quarter exam will be necessary for any student who misses more than two tests during a given quarter. • No exceptions to the rules will be given.
Free Passes • Students will be given six passes during each quarter. • Students can you use these passes to excuse • an unexcused tardy • to go to the bathroom during class • These passes could also be worth • extra credit at the end of the quarter • or 2 pts towards a three-point homework assignment • If a student loses their passes, there will be no extra pass given out.
