  8. Law Civil law tends to involve companies and organizations and does not involve imprisonment or incarceration. There are two types of law – civil and criminal. Criminal lawyers defend or prosecute individuals who have broken the law and could end up going to prison as a result.

  9. What is a Barrister? • A barrister represents client interests. • The fate of a person or corporation is in the hands of a barrister • Barristers help shape and regulate how society functions and how the world will develop. • A barrister works out a place referred to as Chambers. He/she does not have boss, they are affliated with a Chambers and pay rent. They do not earn a salary, but are paid case by case.

  10. How I knew I should become a Barrister… I have always had most of the attributes required of a barrister: • - Good vocabulary • - Hard- working • - Confident public speaker

My Career Path • I took subjects which suited my strengths – English Literature, History and Drama and Theatre Studies • I went to the University of Birmingham and studied Law at undergraduate level. • My first law-related job was work experience at a solicitor’s firm, Boodle Hatfield. • I am here in the US to gain some international and practical legal experience • I work for Reavis Parent Lehrer LLP as a paralegal, providing support to the attorneys.

  12. Important Skills Lawyers must: • Have great attention to detail • Be hard-working • Be able to think on their feet • Have an expansive vocabulary • Be a confident public speaker • Be independent and self-disciplined Do any of you think you have what it takes to be a lawyer?

  13. Challenges REWARDS • You make a big contribution to society. • You are independent (in my particular job). • It can be lucrative. • Biggest frustration: Getting a job • Biggest challenge: Persevering even when success seems unlikely.

  14. DEBATE You will be given ten minutes to brainstorm reasons that support your claim. Structure 1) Proposals: Make an argument. 2) Panel’s Questions 3) Rebuttal: After listening to the other group’s statement and Panel’s questions, create a final argument.
