What are TMT bars and what are the different types? TMT bars are extensively used in different kinds of civil construction projects, therefore they form the cornerstone of modern city life. They are used for making building, beams, slabs, columns and also other kind of structures that bear the live load of people as well as their belongings. Being the core strength of all kinds of structures, the TMT bars are needed to be capable of withstanding large loads. They should also be able to offer protection to a structure against earthquake and windstorms. Poor quality materials like cheap steel bars generally contain very high levels of different unknown elements that can be quite harmful for construction. In other words, these steel bars lack the requisite physical and chemical properties that would make them appropriate building materials. In order to meet up to the advanced load handling requirements of modern steel bars, special methods are used to create products that are referred to as TMT bars. TMT bars are prepared by using a unique metallurgical process called “Thermo Mechanical Treatment”. The TMT bars are technically approved by Bureau of Indian Standards which makes them suitable for construction and building projects. The Fe 500D and Fe 500 are certain better quality TMT steel bars which can be purchased from the market today. Most of the current building projects in India are carried out by the Fe 500D and Fe 500 TMT Bars as they can offer enhanced protection against earthquake and other types of natural disasters. In the TMT bar types Fe 500 and Fe 500D, the 500 denotes minimum yield stress, the term Fe indicates iron and D shows that the bars come with higher properties of ductility. The TMT steel bars have low percentages of phosphorus and sulfur which are quite harmful for steel specimens meant to be used in construction. Higher phosphorus can cause “Cold Shortness” that makes the steel brittle under very cold conditions which can lead to cracking. Higher sulfur content can lead to “Hot Shortness” that lowers the melting point of the steel, thus leading to eventual failure under very high temperature conditions. The overall carbon percentage is also kept low in these bars for improving the weldability and ductility of steel.
Steel manufacturing companies in India craft these bars under heavily regulated manufacturing process that makes them quite easily bendable. The TMT Saria steel bars share a special connection with concrete which is used for all building projects. Concrete is characterized by great compressive power along with rather low ductility and tensile strength. Thus when it combines or fuses with the TMT steel bars; concrete gives rise to highly tensile and ductile end results. Every Primary Producer of Steel in India regularly manufactures Fe500D and Fe500 TMT bars, and while the tensile strength stays the same for both these types of TMT bars, the Fe500D variant comes with higher ductility. Ductility describes the ability of a material to easily deform and adapt as it is put under stress with tensile load within a construction unit.
