GBK PrecalculusJordan Johnson Week 1, Day 4
Today’s agenda • Greetings • Intro • Review / Submit HW (~15 min) • Lesson: Classes of Functions (~15 min) • Classwork / Homework • Lab: GeoGebra • Clean-up
HW Review • Section 1-1, pp. 5-7, #2-5.
Functions – A new definition • A relation is a set of ordered pairs. • So named because it relates numbers; each pair (x, y) relates x to y. • A function is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) in which each value of x occurs only once (and therefore has only one related y-value).
Functions – The Evaluation Rule • Function definitions look like: f(x) = blahblah • Function applications look like: f(15) • Or f(3x) – any expression can be in the parens. • To evaluate an application: • First, evaluate/simplify x if it’s not already simple. • Second, substitute x into the right-hand side
Classes of Functions • Polynomial • Special cases: • Linear • Quadratic • Variation: • “f(x) is directly proportional to x.” • “f(x) is inversely proportional to x.” • Power functions vs. exponential functions • x2 vs. 2x
Classes of Functions (cont.) • Rational functions • Ratio of two polynomials P(x)/Q(x)
Restricting the Domain • …depends on the type of grapher you use. • The book describes how to do it with a graphing calculator. • We’ll do it in GeoGebra too.
Classwork/Homework • pp. 12-14, Problem Set 1-2 • Due Tuesday, 9/7.
Lab • Go to the computer lab. • Load fellowhuman.com/gbk/ when you get there.
Clean-up / Reminders • Pick up all trash / items. • Push in chairs (at front and side tables). • See you tomorrow!
