General Notes “National Adaptations” in ICCS are done in two steps: • 1. Adaptation: • If you DO use ODC for the School and/or Teacher Questionnaire, you will adapt the international definition files. The exported WinDEM codebook (ICG and/or ITG) will automatically reflect all changes. • If you DO NOT use ODC, you must adapt the international WinDEM codebook files (ICG and/or ITG). • For all other Instruments (ISA, ISG, ISR, ISE, ISL) you must adapt the international WinDEM codebook files regardless of whether you use the ODC or not. • 2. Documenting Adaptations • In any case, all national adaptations MUST be documented in the National Adaptations Forms!
General Rules for Adapting in the SurveySystem • Elements of the international definition can NOT be deleted. Elements can only be “disabled”. This applies to ‘Questions’, ‘QuestionParts’, ‘Dimensions’, and ‘Categories’. • All of these elements feature two properties: • 1. “IsNational”If “True”, this element has been added by a manager within the country. Of course, you are allowed to delete it. • 2. “Enabled”If “True”, this element will be shown in the web application (default)If “False”, this element will not be shown in the web application.
Note on Additions and Options • Naturally, additions will not have “International” texts, instructions, or numerals. • In addition to entering your “National” passages, please also supply an English translation (“International”) for the DPC and the ICC so we know what your national category, dimension, or new question is about.
<target grade> grade 8 Adapting <Country-Specific> Terms Trivial, because it’s part of the conversion! International: National: Always
Removing Dimensions If not applicable
c) Head of department Removing Dimensions National: International: If not applicable
How to … To remove a dimension you will have to: • Browse to the desired “ViewType” and “Dimension” within it. • Set the “Enabled” property to “False” • Adapt the WinDEM Question Location for ALL necessary variables inside the Viewtype to correspond to the actual location in the instrument • Change the numeral in all necessary dimensions inside the Viewtype Life demonstration (TQ 3) If necessary
Adding / Inserting Dimensions If necessary
d) Teaching classes outside this school Adding / Inserting Dimensions International: National: If necessary
How to … To enter new dimensions you will have to: • Browse to the desired “Viewtype”. • Open the “Dimensions Editor” from the “Dimensions Data” row. • Press the “Add” button and provide all necessary information, including the variable name(s). • Adapt the WinDEM Question Location and for ALL necessary variables inside the Viewtype to correspond to the actual location in the instrument. • Change the numeral in all necessary dimensions inside the Viewtype Life demonstration (TQ 3) If necessary
Adding / Inserting Categories If absolutely necessary
Under 25 --- Under 20 --- 20 - 24 --- Adding / Inserting Categories International: National: If absolutely necessary

Warning! BUT:This kind of adaptation may endanger international comparability. Data has to be submitted explicitly documented in NAF including recoding advises for the DPC. If absolutely necessary
Change Valid Range If necessary
How to … To change the valid range you will have to: • Select the desired dimension from the property grid. • Set the “Min” and/or “Max” values to meaningful values. Please note that setting this valuedoes not result in user’sresponses being validated. Life demonstration (TQ 1) If necessary
Removing entire Questions If not applicable
Removing Entire Questions National: International: If not applicable
How to … 1. Select a Question (or QuestionPart) node in the tree 2. Set the property “Enabled” to “False” If not applicable

The default is “Single (Non-Categorical)”. • Provide all desired information and national numerals, texts, and instructions. • Set names for all variables. These should be consistent with the international naming scheme. Please add the letter “N” to all nationally defined variables. Life demonstration (TQ 6 - Gender) If necessary
Advanced Issues • You will not be able to add, change or adapt any of the filter rules that forward respondents to a particular question. In case that you have to remove or alter a filter question, please approach the DPC for advice! • You will not be able to add additional “sections” of questions to the on-line definition files.
Export • The “Survey Export Codebook to WinDEM” will … • Automatically export all variables contained in the dimensions • Automatically include any international as well as national variables • Automatically hide all “enabled=false” variables • Automatically add necessary variableinformation (location, labels, valid ranges) • File format: *.sdb • Path: …\ProgramFiles\IEA\SurveySystem_ICCS2009MS\Data\export\
