Functions Your Lymphatic System • Lymphatic system – collects fluid from body tissues paces and returns it to the blood through a system of lymph capillaries and larger lymph vessels • Lymphatic Organs • Lymph – water, dissolved substances, and lymphocytes • Lymphocytes – a type of white blood cell • Movement due to contraction of skeletal muscles and smooth muscles. • Has valves to prevent backward flow.
Lymph Nodes • Lymph nodes – filter out microorganisms and foreign materials • During infection lymph nodes become inflames and tender • Tonsils, Thymus, Spleen • A disease of the Lymphatic System • HIV – attacks lymphocyte, helper T cells • Few T cells means not as able to fight infection Pg. 513 1-4
