Mega Mc Polyhorse The MegaMc PolyHorse is a fully remote control powered pipe handling system that consists of a two adjustable racks & 2 Hydraulic rollers to store and help install the pipe on the jobsite For use with PE pipe sizes up to 1200mm, the PolyHorse can reduce manpower expense, provide an efficient, less hazardous environment for handling pipe bundles, and enhance productivity by 35%. PE pipe is off-loaded from the delivery truck directly onto the PolyHorse, off the ground and out of the way, until needed. One operator controls the loading of the pipe, including alignment and ‘turning’ all from a control box located by the butt fusion equipment PSS have 3 MegaMc Polyhorse units and are the only company in the UK to offer this product
Case Study 1 – Vyrnwy Large Diameter Trunk Main The Vyrnwy Mains rehabilitation is the most ambitious project of its kind History In the 1880s, Victorian Engineers created two pipelines from Lake Vyrnwy to Liverpool, made of cast iron of between 39 to 42 inches in diameter. A bitumen-lined steel pipeline, was built in the 1930s to run alongside the existing two. These three pipes carry 210 million litres of water to more than 900,000 customers in the counties of Cheshire and Merseyside each day. The project After 130 years, it was decided to revamp the cast iron water mains with the latest pipe materials and advanced installation methods. The lines suffered from build-up of iron and manganese, which is a natural occurrence in raw water pipelines.
Case Study 1 – Vyrnwy Large Diameter Trunk Main (part 2) Steel Pipe To start the strategic rehabilitation, specialized jet-pressure equipment blasted the inside of 28.5 kilometres of the newest line between Oswestry and Malpas. The older iron pipes Work began on the older lines in 2011. There were two key techniques : 1. Folded liner inserted into the original pipe (deflects part of the pipe inward to reduce the diameter. After insertion into the host pipe, the pipe is then pressurized to put the line into service and bring the pipe back to an oval or round shape) 2. Swagelining (reduces the natural diameter of the pipeline to fit within the existing pipeline) Both processes take polyethylene pipelines that have been fused together and manipulate the pipe to become a new liner within the existing pipeline. Access holes were created at different places to insert the polyethylene liner into the older pipelines.
Case Study 1 – Vyrnwy Large Diameter Trunk Main (part 3) Use of PSS specialist equipment PSS have provided a McElroy MegaMc™ 1648 machine – capable of welding up to 1200mm pipe Contractors are able to undertake 10 welds per day Production levels are greater than anticipated – running at one pull per week Key ability to “tent” the machine. (Other machines on the market often require a crane or lifting apparatus to lower the facer and heater into the carriage, which makes protecting the joint from the elements near impossible) Data Logger was used to record and document each joint made – critically important on a prestige job like this Bespoke generators are provided , modified to run other equipment on site PSS McElroy MegaMc™ machine, in action at Vyrnwy Another successful weld!!
Case Study 2 – Boston to Covenham scheme This scheme for Anglian Water is joining two reservoirs together to maximise the water available to local residents. This £40 million Anglian Water scheme will pipe water from the company’s Covenham reservoir near Louth down to Boston in order to secure supplies for the growing town. This will cover a 63km stretch, split into two phases. When completed, the 560mm pipeline will be able to carry 26 million litres of water south every day. The area has a low rain fall and a rising population, so the utility decided to optimise its resources in a very efficient manner. The first section phase was approximately 40km of pipeline between Covenham and Miningsby Reservoirs, which will be followed by a further 20km section from Miningsby Reservoir to Boston where it will be linked to the existing water distribution system.

Case Study 2 – Boston to Covenham scheme (part 3) What our customers say: “I am Andy Young, pipeline site manager for J. N. Bentley . We are currently constructing a 63km, 560mm diameter P.E. pipeline in Lincolnshire for Anglian Water. During the planning stages of this project we consulted with PSS regarding the hire of 2 x T900 Tracstar butt fusion machines serviced by 2 MegaMc polyhorse units. After the duration times and rates were agreed, PSS arranged for operator training to be carried out with the McElroy engineer and PSS staff at their Wetherby depot on the machines assigned to this project. To follow up on this service PSS also provided training on delivery of their equipment with the J.N.Bentley operatives on-site, this continued until all were happy with assembly procedures and production rates of the machines. All plant supplied to site from PSS was of a high quality with a fitter assigned to service all machines on a weekly basis and also on call for any breakdowns 24hrs a day. I would have no hesitation in using the McElroy butt fusion machines and polyhorse system supplied by PSS on future projects”
Case Study 3 – Huyton In June 2011, a section of the Victorian pipe work in the Huyton district of Liverpool spectacularly burst The incident was caused by a weak joint on a pipe and caused a huge plume of water to shoot 40 foot into the air, flooding streets and more than 200 homes and businesses in the area. In the first phase, engineers inspected, renewed and sealed joints on the 40-inch pipe along a 2.5 mile stretch of Liverpool Road. Phase two of the work will concentrate on a second water mains - a 36-inch pipe - that runs along the same section of road. The contractor will insert a new plastic pipe within the original cast iron water main to create a secure new lining. PSS have supplied the Tracstar 900 Automatic Butt Fusion Machine to carry out the welding on this critical project. .
