5. Who Can Apply through Western? OGS Students who are currently enrolled full-time here at Western or who graduated from Western at any time between Nov.15, 2006 and Nov.15, 2007, and are currently not registered.

6. Who Can Apply Through Western? NSERC Students who are currently registered as full-time, part-time, or special undergraduate or graduate students in an NSERC-supported field at Western, or students who are not currently attending university but last attended Western less than 12 months ago in a Western degree program.

7. Who Can Apply Through Western? SSHRC Doctoral Students who are currently registered at, or on an approved leave from, Western in any level course, or in any other capacity; for example, part-time, full-time, one course only, course not related to the doctoral program, or special student.

8. Who Can Apply Through Western? SSHRC CGS Master’s Students who are currently registered at, or on an approved leave from, Western in any level course, or in any other capacity, for example, part-time, full-time, one course only, course not related to the Master’s program, or special student; or who are not currently registered at a university but were registered at Western between Jan.1, 2007 and the present.

9. Who Can Apply Through Western? CIHR CGS Master’s At the time of application, currently registered Western students who have completed, or are in the last year of, a Bachelor’s degree; or, have been registered for no more than 10 months as full-time students in a Master’s program; or have been registered for no more than 10 months as full-time PhD students having directly entered the PhD from the Bachelor’s.

OGS Eligibility OGS Applicants must: • Plan to be enrolled in a graduate program leading a master’s or doctoral degree at an Ontario university • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (landing no later than Nov.15, 2007) or be admitted to Canada with a student visa dated no later than Nov.15, 2007

OGS Eligibility OGS (cont’d) • Students entering the 1st or 2nd year of graduate studies at the time of application, or who will be in the 1st or 2nd year during the tenure of the award, must have an overall average of at least A- (80% at Western), or equivalent, on the last 20 one-term courses, or equivalent, completed.

12. OGS Eligibility OGS (cont’d) • Students entering the 3rd year or beyond of graduate studies at the time of application, or who will be in the 3rd year or beyond during the tenure of the award, must have an overall average of at least A- (80% at Western), on all graduate courses completed.

13. OGS Eligibility OGS (cont’d) • You have not received more than 4 years of government-funded student awards. • You have not already received 2 OGS awards at the Master’s level. • You have not already received 4 OGS awards at the doctoral level.

14. NSERC Eligibility NSERC applicants must: • be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada; • hold, or expect to hold (at the time you take up the award), a degree in science or engineering from a university whose standing is acceptable to NSERC (if you have a degree in a field other than science or engineering, NSERC may accept your application at its discretion)

15. NSERC Eligibility NSERC Special Note 1: There is a single application and selection process for the NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarships and the NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships. The top-ranked applicants at each level, master’s and doctoral, will be offered a Canada Graduate Scholarship and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a Postgraduate Scholarship.

16. NSERC Eligibility NSERC Special Note 2: Scholarship support for graduate studies through NSERC is limited to a lifetime maximum of four years full-time equivalent. NSERC will include any graduate studies-level support offered by SSHRC and CIHR, and taken up, in the calculation of available support.

17. NSERC Eligibility NSERC Master’s & Doctoral Applicants must: • intend to pursue in the following year full-time graduate studies and research at the master's or doctoral level in an NSERC-supported area; and, • have obtained a first-class average (a grade of "A-") in each of the last two completed years of study, regardless of the number of credits completed. Any exceptions to this requirement must be accompanied by supporting documentation that justifies the submission.

18. NSERC Eligibility NSERC Master’s Applicants must: • have completed, as of December 31st, 2007, nomore than the full-time equivalent of 12 months of studies in the master ’s program for which you are requesting funding; • have completed, as of December 31st, 2007, no more than the full-time equivalent of 12 months of studies in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program.

19. NSERC Eligibility NSERC Doctoral Applicants must: • have completed, as of December 31st, 2007, no more than the full-time equivalent of 24 months of studies in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding; or • have completed, as of December 31st, 2007, the full-time equivalent of between 4 and 36 months of studies in the doctoral program for which you are requesting funding if you were admitted into a doctoral program directly from your bachelor’s program.

20. SSHRC Eligibility CGS Master’s Applicants must: • be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada • not be under SSHRC sanction for financial or research misconduct • be applying for support to pursue your 1stgraduate degree, and not have completed more than 12 months of full-time graduate study at the proposed start date of the award. (all previous graduate studies will be included in determining eligibility regardless of discipline)

SSHRC Eligibility CGS Master’s Applicants must: (cont’d) • have achieved a first-class average (80%) in each of the last 2 years of full-time study or equivalent. • if not currently registered at a university, have completed your Bachelor’s degree no earlier than Jan.1st, 2001 • not have already received an award for Master’s level study from SSHRC, CIHR or NSERC

22. SSHRC Eligibility SSHRC Doctoral Special Note: Students apply for both the Doctoral Fellowship and the doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarship by completing one application form. SSHRC will automatically consider you for both.

23. SSHRC Eligibility Doctoral Applicants must: • be citizens or permanent residents of Canada • be applying for support to pursue your 1st PhD • be pursuing doctoral studies (or a combined MA/PhD) in the social sciences and humanities • not have already received a scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, CIHR, or NSERC to undertake or complete any doctoral degree • not be under SSHRC sanction for financial or research misconduct

24. CIHR Eligibility CGS Master’s Applicants must: (cont’d) • be applying for support to pursue your first graduate degree (i.e., Master's or PhD). All previous studies at the graduate level, regardless of discipline, either course-based or research based, will be included in determining eligibility; • not have already held an award from SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR or any other federal source to undertake and/or complete a Master's or PhD degree.

25. CIHR Eligibility CIHR CGS Master’s Applicants must: • be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident; • at the time of deadline (February 1st): • have completed or be in the last year of a Bachelor's degree; or, • have been registered for no more than ten months as a full-time student in a Master's program; or, • have been registered for no more than ten months as a full-time PhD student and were admitted to the PhD program directly from your Bachelor's degree.

28. On-line Application Registration System OGS Go to the OSAP Main Page to log into the secure section of the OSAP Web site where you will find the OGS online application. If you have not applied to OSAP previously, click on the “New Student” link in order to log in. It is extremely important that you keep your password in a secure place, that you do not give it out to others, and that you change it periodically. Do not forget or misplace your password because considerable time and effort is required to have it replaced.

29. On-line Application Registration System OGS (cont’d) In order to print your OGS Application Package you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0 or higher  installed on your computer. After you submit your application, you MUST PRINT a copy of your completed online application. It will be provided as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file and includes all of the information that you provided online. You can do this right after you submit your online application, or you can print it at any time from your OGS Online Services Page.

30. On-line Application Registration System CIHR All applicants must use the Web Form application modules when applying for funding for all CIHR programs. Inputted PDF fillable forms will only be accepted where a corresponding web form does not exist. Hand-written applications will not be accepted. PDF forms for which there is an equivalent web form will remain on CIHR's web site to serve only as visual examples.

31. On-line Application Registration System NSERC All applicants must complete Form 200 on-line a reference number will be provided. This reference number must be forwarded to the proposed referees to complete Appendix 1. The number generated by the on-line process is not a PIN number. Hand-written applications will not be accepted. PDF forms serve only as visual examples.

32. On-line Application Registration System SSHRC All applicants simply click on the Application Form link on the SSHRC Web site and similar to NSERC, must register and complete the application online. 33. Quota System • For certain competitions, agencies will only allow each participating university to submit a certain number of applications….a quota. • Graduate Studies convenes a selection committee every year to choose the most meritorious applicants for these competitions

34. External Transcripts • It is a requirement of all scholarship competitions coordinated by Graduate studies that transcripts from outside universities be current and official. If an applicant is unable to obtain an official transcript from an overseas university, it remains that applicant’s decision to have the university submit a true copy of the original document verified by his/her academic program official.

35. Western Transcripts • All OGS applicants must provide official Western transcripts • For all other competitions coordinated by Graduate Studies, it is necessary only to provide a HEPS registration summary. Graduate Studies will provide official Western transcripts for these applicants should they be selected to advance in their respective competitions.

36. When are Results Expected? Results for the OGS competition and the SSHRC and NSERC competitions will be announced in the early spring. CIHR results are announced in June.
