  2. Protein • The main function of protein is to build and repair tissues (muscle tissue)

  3. Protein • Protein can be a source of energy but should be used as a last resort • Only 10% of our diet should come from protein.

  4. Protein • Women require about 45 grams a day.

  5. Men require about 57 grams a day.

  6. Protein contains 4 calories per gram

  7. Types of Protein • There are 2 types • of protein. • Complete and Incomplete

  8. Complete Proteins • Complete proteins contain ample amounts of essential amino acids. • Complete proteins come from animal meat and animal by products, and some grains and beans such as soy and quinoa (keenwah)

  9. Incomplete proteins • Incomplete proteins do not have enough of one or more of the essential amino acids. • Incomplete proteins come from plant or vegetable sources. • Incomplete proteins must be combined with each other to create complete proteins.
