Week 2 Monday: & peek at week • Review Summarizing • This I Believe~ absent Friday?…share & turn in • Short video/ note taking/ write a paraphrase and synopsis 2nd hour Dance Ban • Introduce the propaganda project • Watch start of What the Bleep~ Note taking & searching for arguable topics • HWBring an article other than an editorial • Mr. Kloosterintroduces Ethos Pathos Logos tomorrow, Tuesday 3-20-12 • Wednesday-Friday: Rest of week Propaganda and viewing videos for arguable ideas & making a source side of note card

Week 2 Monday 3-19-12 • Propaganda Project: purpose/objective : to demonstrate understanding of propaganda to identify propaganda for making educated decisions • Agenda/Lessons: • Monday-Thursday • Find 7-8 Advertisement examples per day (totaling 30) noting • Technique used& explanation as to how company incorporated it • Thursday: Lab B/ Time to research for publications demonstrating propaganda need News article, magazine article & editorial cartoon ~ written explanation to identify technique used • HW: come in with articles Monday if not able to find during class • Monday: April 11th: Typing day Reflection Piece • HW write Draft reflection if not completed in class • Tuesday: April 11 assemble booklet add table of contents Due Thursday start of class • Wednesday: share booklets ( pick 3 Ad pages, one of the written examples & Your reflection Page)

Rubric for Propaganda Project • Due start of class ______________ Student name ______________________hour___________date_________ • Create a booklet using 8 x 11 paper. • REQUIRED: 5 points ~ Cover with Name, Date, Hour, & Title of Project • 5 points ~ Must have Table of Contents • 1. 10 points Research and define propaganda ~ cite your sources • 2. 10 pointsList of definitions of 10 techniques • 3. 20 points Propaganda techniques using the 8 listed plus 2 of your choice (10 total) • Provide 2 examples of each technique with an advertisement (2point per example) • 4. 30 Explain with clarity how each advertisement uses the technique in a small paragraph at the bottom of each ad, or on back if no room (reference and state specifically what is in the ad) 2 points each • 5. Then Find….propaganda in written communication • 15 points ~ A Magazine article: explain technique(s) used • 15 points~ A Newspaper article; explain technique • 10 points~ A Editorial cartoon; explain technique • 6. 15 points~ Reflection Page: • Write a full page DBL spaced reflection of what you learned explaining how you might apply to your life. Reference some of your examples for support as you explain. TUESDAY 3-20-12 • Ethos, Pathos, Logos Mr. Klooster • Notes card • Source Card (information on back) • HW: Look up propaganda techniques 7 definitions: • Required techniques: • Add 2 of your own for total of 10 • bandwagon, repetition, transfer, emotional appeal, testimonial, either or fallacy, snob appeal

Tuesday Mr. Klooster Assignment • Article was read and modeled highlighting of ethos, pathos, and logos. • Student then were to read their article • Create a color key to highlight text • Identify & Highlight ethos, pathos, logos • At end of article review the colors and determine the balance of ethos, pathos, and logos. Write a paragraph stating which element is most effective, which is least effective and explain why on both points.

  7. Wednesday 3-21-12 • Hand out for instructions for Note Cards & Source cards • Complete a source card & turn in • Propaganda Project Time

Thursday 22 & Friday 23 • Propaganda project: majority of hour • HW for week end : find news article, magazine article & editorial cartoon to bring to class and analyze in class Monday • Monday March 26: use above text material in class • Tuesday March 26: Assemble project & write reflection • Project Due Wednesday or Thursday before break  Present for part of grade
