About the SREP • Topics include cross section of cutting edge research at Case Western Reserve University, NASA and Cleveland Clinic, such as: Stem cells, fuel cells, nanotechnology, space flight experiments, oncology, cardiology, environmental, medical, microelectrochemical biosensor

SREP Summary • Elective “beyond the curriculum” program founded in early 1998 in which 1/3 of students grades 9-12 enroll • Students conduct multi-year projects in real life, state of the art science and technology • Topics include engineering, biomedical, biochemistry, nanotechnology, theoretical astrophysics, anthropology, space flight experiments on the International Space Station and more • Research locations include NASA Glenn, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Museum of Natural History and more

Logistics of SREP in 10 Easy Steps... • Students register for Research Seminar class that meets with HB Research Director • Students & Research Director brainstorm on possible research topics and type of commitment each student is able to make • Director seeks out & cultivates mentors in research community • As brainstorming progresses, Director makes individualized placements between students & local research labs that are good fit • Director arranges initial logistics & accompanies students on initial visits to outside research institutions
Logistics of SREP in 10 Easy Steps... • Once placed, students go to placement once per week after school plus many weeks in summer for duration of high school • Students become asset in laboratory placement over time; grow in knowledge and empowerment • HB Research Director remains involved throughout entire process, making sure students remain reliable, responsible & professional • Research Director locates empowering local, state, national, and even international conferences and competitions for students to enter (optional), and fosters them through process • Students graduate from HB & the SREP with empowerment & skills that enable them to become future leaders in their chosen field

Engineering Goal: Make Engineering part of the required curriculum for all students Offer special programs as electives to interested students in Prime, Middle and Upper School Allow students to see the possibilities for women in Engineering
Engineering in the EC-12 Curriculum • Engineering is embedded throughout the science curriculum • Applies science concepts to design ethical solutions to problems • Emphasis on relevant problem solving, hands- on opportunities, collaboration, mentorship, communication, and global responsibility.

Designing Solar Heaters Examples of interdisciplinary problems to solve: first graders design simple circuits, second graders clean up mock oil spills, third graders create water filtration systems, fourth graders design Mars Rovers
Middle School Science Focuses on the importance of science in everyday life Emphasizes experimental design and testing All students complete an Independent Science project, Data Analysis project and Engineering project in grades 6-8 Encourages independent thinking, communication Begins to explore ethics of technology, green solutions Begins to use mentors to encourage a true understanding of science possibilities
Designing solutions to problems For example, middle school girls design and test earthquake-proof buildings, egg drop containers, rotary motor inventions, Rube Goldberg contraptions, and locker organizers. Some pursue engineering questions for their Independent Science Projects.
Middle School Academies Girls select Academies based on interests. These semester long, ungraded electives offer a chance to experiment in a new area of curiosity. Middle School Science Research Academy Students work with a mentor teacher to research a question of interest to them, designing their own experiments which are then presented to scientist judges at our Science and Engineering Fair. Students move on to further competitions at the local and state level.
Engineering Students in this Academy design a solution to a real problem with constraints; in this case they built a boat to support their entire team out of recycled materials to race in the final competition.
