  1. Use of Internet Videos in Powerpoint Presentations Lawrence Mc Glynn MD San Jose AETC Stanford University October 2013

  2. Why consider this? • 2009 NYU study interviewing 57 faculty and librarians from 20 institutions and across 18 academic departments and schools • Trend: media literacy -> media fluency Kaufman P, Mohan J. Video Use and Higher Education: Options for the Future. NYU-Creative Commons Publications. June 2009.

  3. Considerations of video-based learning • Core intelligences of verbal/linguistic, visual/spatial, musical/rhythmic, and emotional • left and right hemispheres • triune brain • brain wave frequencies Berk, R. A. (2009). Multimedia teaching with video clips: TV, movies, YouTube, and mtvU in the college classroom. International Journal of Technology in Teaching and Learning, 5(1), 1–21.

  4. Why not put the link in Powerpoint? • That is an option • Sometimes the link may be down or slow • Sometimes the signal may be lost • Some conference rooms have no signal • You may only want a portion of that clip

  5. I found a clip I like • Flash Video (.flv) is currently the de facto standard for online video. Notable users of it include YouTube, Hulu, VEVO, Yahoo! Video, metacafe, and Reuters.com • We need a way to • Download the .flv file • Convert it to a file that powerpoint will accept and play

  6. Xilisoft • Advantages • Can work well • Free • Disadvantages • Free version only allows 3 minute clip • Latest version keeps crashing on my PC

  7. YTD • Advantages • Easy to download • Free • Accommodates longer clips • Downside • It reset my internet explorer default to Yahoo

  8. Problem: PTSD/Trauma in Women with HIV/AIDS • Alcohol may be seen as a soother…an escape • Women with HIV/AIDS and a history of trauma at elevated risk of abusing substances including alcohol

  9. Find the clip you want • Go to Youtube • Search for the clip and open it up • It’s a longer clip, so I’m going to YTD • Download the video • Convert the video to WMV file • Now it is ready for powerpoint to use

  10. So many themes to illustrate the complex problem of alcoholism • Physical • Intoxication • Withdrawal • Overall poor health (malnutrition, obesity, falls, GI disease) • Psychological • Dependence vs. abuse • Socioeconomic • Maladaptive patterns in social supports including enabling, denial • Social and financial decline

  11. I’d like to use only a part of the whole video though, to illustrate physical effects of alcohol

  12. I’d like to add text to illustrate a salient point

  13. Oh my, the poor thing must have eaten at Chick-fil-A

  14. Putting it all together • We have the building blocks to make a serious educational program • We can flash words we want to emphasize • We can find virtually any clip to help demonstrate a key point or topic • We can use the clip to help us illustrate cases

  15. My back is aching My bra’s too tight My booty’s shaking From left to right My back is aching My bra’s too tight My booty’s shaking From left to right Go left, right, left, right Go left; Go right Go left; Go right Go left, right, left, right Go left, right, left, right Go left; Go right My back is aching My bra’s too tight My booty’s shaking From left to right Giddy up Giddy up Giddy up Let’s make that booty bounce

  16. Pearls • Powerpoint may accept a file, but if the name is too long, it might not play • Make sure that if you put your talk on a flash drive, you also move the clip with it • If you are using a flash drive, test out the presentation. Sometimes the clips may not work • Practice, practice, practice!
