Developing Students’ Reading Comprehension through Oral Questioning in an ESL Classroom Prepared by: Liyana Binti Ahmad Afip Student ID: 2010439958 Prepared for: Associate Professor Dr. Hj Izaham Shah Ismail
Introduction • Students may provide correct answers but for the wrong reasons (Fauziah Hassan, 2002) • Hence, in helping the students to comprehend the text better by using their meta-cognitive awareness, the teacher needs to guide and informs the students on the strategies in reading. • Systematic oral questioning is important in the process of scaffolding the students’ comprehension process. As mentioned by Fatimah Hashim (2002) when she cited the past research on the quality of the teacher involvement during instruction in reading skills, it was found that the teachers who had highly rated explanation during reading lessons produced students who were more aware about how to use the strategies. • It is the time for the teacher and the learner to change their believed, which usually related to giving the right answer (product), passive reading and moves to a better way of learning which is by having active participation from the students which require active inference and selection of strategy.
Statement of the Problem & Research Purpose Statement of the problem 1. Do the students know about their strategies in reading? 2. How to develop that strategies? 3. How do the students perceive that technique in the classroom? Research Purpose 1. To determine the strategies used by the students by analyzing the questionnaires given. 2. To examine on how oral questioning practiced in the class, helps in improving the students comprehension of the text, by comparing the results from the pre-test and post-test. 3. To investigate on the students’ perception towards oral questioning by collecting and analyzing written response from the students.
Research Questions • 1. What are the strategies used by the students in reading? • 2. How does oral questioning help in improving students’ comprehension? • 3. What are the students perceptions towards oral questioning conducted in the classroom?
Methodology • Design - Mixed-method research According to Fraenkel & Wallen (2009), a mixed method research involves the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods in a single study. - Quasi-experimental • Sample/Population • Convenience & Purposive sampling
Methodology • Data Collection Procedures • Step 1: Pre-test • Step 2:Survey • Step 3: Treatment • Step4: Posttest • Step 5: Feedback • Data Analysis • The data collected from the survey will be entered into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 14.0 • Analysis of variance (ANOVA) will be run in order to decide if the reported strategy use by the students had a significant effect on reading test results. • Written feedback- coding, theme and exploring the patterns across categories.
