FINAL PASSAGE:“Now, in the place where he was crucified, there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus. And rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed."
“HE AROSE” THE MIRACLE OF THE BIBLE
PROOF OF JESUS’ DEITY • HIS RADICAL TEACHING? • HIS POWER OVER NATURE? • HIS POWER TO HEAL? • HIS DEATH ON THE CROSS? • HIS RESURRECTION FROM THE DEAD? • “Concerning Jesus Christ… declared to be the Son of God with power…by the resurrection from the dead” (Rm. 1:1-4)
WITHOUT THE RESURRECTION… THE DISCIPLES WOULD'VE QUIT I Cor. 15:13-19 ALL SPIRITUAL PROMISES ARE EMPTY NO N.T. O.T. WOULD BE UNFULFILLED NO 2ND COMING NO JUDGMENT GOD'S CHARACTER IS QUESTIONABLE NOTHING BEYOND THE GRAVE OBEDIENCE IS USELESS GOSPEL CANNOT SAVE WORSHIP IS VAIN
Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God? How do you know? YES! HE AROSE! How do you know that he arose?
THE FACTS • Old Testament writers spoke about it (Ps. 16:9-10) • Jesus himself was a real, historical figure (Lk. 2:1-2) • Jesus spoke of his death-burial-resurrection consistently during his ministries: • Early Judean ministry (Jn. 2:19-21) • Great Galilean ministry (Mt. 12:38-40) • Perean ministry (Mt. 20:17-19) • Later Judean ministry (Mt. 26:31-32)
THE FACTS • Jesus was crucified, buried, and the 3rd day the tomb was found empty (Ac. 26:26) • The church was established within 2 months of Jesus’ death (Acts 2) • The main doctrine taught by the church was Jesus’ resurrection (Ac. 2:32) • For the next 30 years, the church grew amidst opposition, poverty, persecution & death (II Cor. 4:8-14)
The empty tomb doesn’t prove that Jesus was raised from the dead….. …but a full tomb would prove he wasn’t.
EXPLAINING THE EMPTY TOMB • THE DISCIPLES STOLE THE BODY? • THE ROMANS OR THE JEWS MOVED THE BODY? • JESUS DIDN’T ACTUALLY DIE? • HE AROSE! • “He is not here, for he has risen” (Mt. 28:6)
THE WITNESSES • Mary Magdalene (Jn. 20:11-18) • The other women (Mt. 28:9-10) • 2 disciples on road to Emmaus (Lk. 24:13-35) • Peter (Lk. 24:34) • Thomas (Jn. 20:24-29) • James (I Cor. 15:7) • All of the apostles together (Lk. 24:36-43) • 500 people in Galilee (I Cor. 15:6) • Saul of Tarsus (Ac. 9:1-9) • John (Rev. 1:9-18) • Over 500 witnesses saw Jesus after his death! (cf. II Cor. 13:1)
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RESURRECTION • Proves Jesus is God’s Son (Rm. 1:4) • Confirms we serve a living Savior (Ac. 2:29-32) • Previews Christianity’s victory over enemies (Rev. 5:5-6; Rm. 8:37) • Shows us that death is not the end (I Cor. 15:21) • Assures us forgiveness of our sins (I Cor. 15:17)
THE PLAN OF SALVATION • Hear the Gospel (Rm. 10:17) • Believe with Heart (Jn. 8:24) • Repent of Sins (II Pet. 3:9) • Confess Faith in Christ (Ac. 8:37) • Baptism in Water (Rm. 6:3-4) • Remain Faithful (Rev. 2:10) 2ND LAW OF PARDON • Repent and Pray God for Forgiveness (Ac. 8:22; Ja. 5:16)
