WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION? The concept refers to the process of recognizing values and clarifying concepts in order to develop skills and attitudes necessary to understand and appreciate the interrelatedness among men, his culture and his biophysical surroundings. Source: International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
CONSCIOUSNESS It has been defined loosely as a constellation of attributes of mind such as subjectivity, self-awareness, sentience, and the ability to perceive a relationship between oneself and one's environment.
VALUES Beliefs of a person or social group in which they have an emotional investment (either for oragainst something). Personal values evolve from situations with the external world and can change over time.
The integrity in the application of values refers to its continuity; persons have integrity if they apply their values appropriately regardless of arguments or negative reinforcement from others.
ATTITUDE Is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual's like or dislike for an item. Attitudes are positive, negative or neutral views of an "attitude object.” Attitudes can be changed through persuasion. Emotion is a common component in persuasion, social influence, and attitude change.
LET’S THINK ABOUT IT! (Activity) 3 personal ideas that might make a better world…
JUST A QUESTION… What values or attitudes are needed to achieve these ideas?
SOME RECENT IDEAS In these days, we can realize various global issues; however, one of the most notable is related to the environment, which has become a most popular area since the last three decades.
Although the environmental consciousness results from the interaction between the society and family, formal education given in this process is also important in increasing the environmental consciousness of the society.
MAIN GOAL Environmental Education goes beyond providing students with simple information about environmental issues.
A variety of environmental problems now affect our entire world. As globalization continues and the Earth's natural processes transform local problems into international issues, few societies are being left untouched by major environmental problems.
Some of the largest problems now affecting the world are: • Acid Rain • Air Pollution • Global Warming • Ozone Depletion • Smog • Water Pollution • Overpopulation • Rain Forest Destruction • Noise • Graffiti • Etcetera.
MISSION OF EDUCATION • 1. It is important to recognize that the teachers play an important role in teaching environmental-based concepts. • 2. If there is an urge to do something for the environment, the teachers will try to teach Environmental Education despite the barriers.
3. The schools are really interested in these environmental issues, but it is not enough yet. Teachers need the support of the whole society, it is a collective effort.
Let’s work together... It is stated that if the students do not have the proper knowledge and understanding of causes and effects of these environmental issues, it will be very hard for them to make correct decisions in the future to reduce and control these problems.
PROPOSAL • We must understand that it is urgent to give the necessary training both to the students in school and the people in society. • Everybody must not forget that we have one world. So, let’s work together to preserve it. • Because, to know is not enough, to apply is also necessary.
A FINAL REFLECTION... • LET’S CHANGE THE WORLD TOGETHER!
