Lisa Spiro December 3, 2014 Update on Rice’s Open Access Policy
Rice’s Open Access Policy, Passed by the Faculty Senate on April 18, 2012 • “make published articles written by faculty members available for open dissemination” (post-policy) • Author’s final version of article is deposited into Rice Digital Scholarship Archive (RDSA) • Faculty can opt-out by completing a waiver or can request an embargo
Rationale for Open Access • Uphold the university’s mission of “disseminating the fruits of its research and scholarship as widely as possible” • Support public access to research • Enjoy likely citation advantage
Managing Publications through the Rice Digital Scholarship Archive • Collections include: • Faculty publications • Theses & dissertations • Cultural objects http://scholarship.rice.edu/

Faculty Publications Contributed to RDSA, 2012-2014 • Total Deposits: ~ 990 (significant increase over pre-policy) • Publications come from across campus • Some faculty contribute many publications
Barriers to Faculty Participation M.G. Kafkas
Low Awareness of Policy “Aware, Plate 3”
Only about 30% of Publications Are Deposited or Submitted for Deposit Articles Deposited or Submitted for Deposit to RDSA (Jan. to early Nov. 2014 ), out of 429 total
The Barrier Is Generally Not Resistance to Sharing Publications Online • Rice Publication Pages: • Researcher • Lab • Institute/ Center
Why Should the Library Make Accessible Rice Publications? • Likely greater visibility on Google Scholar • Single access point rather than siloes • Management & preservation by library professionals
Future Plans Paul Hocksenar
Plans for Improving Participation in Rice’s Open Access Policy • Understand barriers and motivations. • Conduct more outreach. • Seek partnerships.
The Grand Vision • Integrate OA deposits into faculty workflow to minimize time and effort • Demonstrate clear benefits to faculty in increased visibility and reduced hassle http://www.flickr.com/photos/kristinmarshall/4842064949/
