Introduction • Terms • Digital Literacy: “The ability to locate, organize, understand, evaluate, and analyze information using digital technology” (Digital Literacy, n.d.). • Social Media. “The use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue” (Social Media, n.d.). • Social Networking Services. “An online service, platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting of social networks or social relations among people, who, for example, share interests and/or activities” (Social Networking Service, n.d.).

Introduction • What is Information Communication Technology • “The role of unified communications and the integration of telecommunications … computers, middleware as well as necessary software, storage- and audio-visual systems, which enable users to create, access, store, transmit, and manipulate information” (Information and Communications Technology, n.d.).

Introduction (cont.) • Schools should seek alternative methods for teaching • PowerPointand lecture courses = Old methods • Old methods are still being used (Gibbs, 1981) • Old methods = student boredom (Mann & Robinson, 2009). • Student boredom = Lower academic performances

  6. Teaching with Facebook? Opportunity • There is room for an alternative teaching method (opportunity) • Explore Social Networks Sites • Millions of users utilizing these services • Twitter, Youtube, Linkedin • Facebook

History of • Facebook • Social Networking Site started in 2004 • 1 Million Users in 2004 Over 750 million Users in 2011(Statistics, n.d.). • Functions within Facebook • Free membership registration • Comment – Give feed backs • Chat – Share ideas and discussions (post url, video links, photos, etc.)

Facebook Mobile Users In 2009, cell phones subscriptions were reported to reach 4.6 billion globally (Whitney, 2010) Neilson estimate there will be more smart phones than feature phonesby end of 2011 Entner (2010) Of the total 750 million users, 43% are currently accessing Facebook through mobile devices (Statistics, n.d.) Smart Phones Feature Phones

Facebook into the Future • No organizations want to invest time and money in a technology that will no longer be available tomorrow • Institutions can rely on Facebook • Growing number of users • Kirkpatrick declare Facebook is worth close to two billion in cash (as cited in Burke, 2011, para. 2) 2011, 2012, 2013, ….

Impact • Huge learning curve for teachers • Poore (2001) stresses that teacherswill need to literate themselves withdigital literacy in order to teach iteffectively to students. • Positive • Facebook interaction measures psychological well-being(Ellison, Steinfield, & Lampe, 2007) • Online posting capabilities gives students a chance to participate and share ideas • Negative • Friendship addiction = fuel insecurity in users (Therapy Today, 2008)

  11. Teaching with Facebook? Recomendations • Adopt Facebook as a teaching tool • Online discussion using its chat function • Commenting and Postings between users • a new way of learning that will engage the learning experience

Conclusion • Schools should adopt Facebook as a teaching tool • There is room for improvement from the use of old methods like PowerPoint slides and lecture courses • With the millions of users on social networking sites daily and the growing number of mobile, it opens up another opportunity to link the two together • Facebook has many capabilities to offer and time invested into may be worth the effort.
