Warm- Up • What are you expected to be doing when the bell rings? • How long do you have to make up work from a legal absence? • Where is make up work located in the classroom? • What is the late work policy? • What must be worn to participate in lab? • What questions do you have about the STEM fair and the syllabus? • Sign the PRIDE pact/ Hand in Bubble Lab

  7. The Metric System • International System of Units (SI) • Easy to use mathematically • More divisions – improves accuracy of measurements • Used internationally – easier to communicate

  8. Giga (G) – 109 Mega (M) – 106 Kilo (k) – 103 Hecto (h) – 102 Deka (D) - 101 Base Unit – 1 Deci (d) – 10-1 Centi (c) – 10-2 Milli (m) – 10-3 Micro (u) – 10-6 Nano (n) – 10-9 Pico (p) – 10-12 Prefixes

  9. SI Base Units • Length = meter (m) • Mass = kilogram (kg) - Gram is commonly used (g) • Time = seconds (s) • Temperature = Kelvin (K) • Count/Quantity = mole (mol) • Electric Current = ampere (A) • Luminous Intensity = candela (cd)

  10. Derived Units • Come from combinations of SI base units • Volume – space an object takes up - Solids – cubic centimeter (cm3) - Liquids – Liter (L) - 1000 cm3 = 1 L - 1 cm3 = 1 ml

  11. Derived Units • Density = mass/volume - g/cm3 or kg/cm3 or g/ml

  12. Converting Metrics • Kids Have Dropped Over Dead Converting Metrics • K = Kilo • H = Hecto • D = Deka • O = One (base unit) – 1 gram, 1 liter, 1 meter • D = Deci • C = Centi • M = Milli

  13. Exit Ticket • Ms. Ose will hold up 3 pieces of lab equipment. Write down the scientific name and the function and which unit would be the most effective to measure it in.
