Tools for Measuring • Meter Stick- Useful and efficient tool for measuring lengths. Capable of measuring in mm, cm, and m • Metric Ruler- Useful for measuring short lengths, capable of measuring in mm and cm • GraduatedCylinder- Measures volume of a liquid in milliliters • Spring Scale- Used to measure the weight of an object suspended in air or in water
Tools for Measuring Continued… • Triple Beam Balance- Measures mass, or how much matter an object is composed of • Thermometer- Measures temperature, Fahrenheit or Celsius (0° C = freezing point of water)(100° C = boiling point of water) • Beaker- Measures volume of liquids
Holding and Moving Substances • Test Tubes- Transferring substances, heating substances, testing substances • Test Tube Rack- Holder for test tubes • Test Tube Tongs- Picking up and handling or heating hot test tubes • Tongs- Used to pick up and handle hot glassware
Holding and Moving Substances Continued… • Ring stand, Ring and Wire Gauze- Provide support for glassware, especially during heating • Medicine Dropper- Transfer small amounts of liquid to obtain accurate measurements • Scoopula- Transfer small amounts of dry chemicals • Forceps- Used for picking up and moving small objects • Burette Clamp- Used to secure a burette or flask to a ring stand
Holding and Moving Substances Continued… • Flasks • Two types: • Erlenmyer- Used to store, measure, or mix liquids • Florence- Also referred to as a boiling flask used to boil liquids
Other Tools • Bunsen Burner- Provides heat to cause certain changes to take place in substances • Filter and Filter Paper- Separates substances • Microscope- Used to magnify objects • Pulleys- Simple machines that make work easier by reducing the amount of effort force needed
What you are responsible for: • You need to be able to identify what these tools look like, their names, and their functions. • Your quiz on Friday will ask you to identify 10 of these tools that I choose and provide that information. ***Remember re-writing the definitions is a great way to remember things***
