New Orleans! • Founded by France in 1718 • Fell under Spanish rule • Gained interest of President Jefferson TO
Louisiana Purchase • French gave the territory without much of a fight. • The United States bought the Louisiana Territory for $15 million. • It became officially part of the United States on October 20, 1803.
Mission of Discovery • Traveled to Western American Lands • To Find out more about them Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark • They went to form peaceful relations with the Indians
Lewis and Clark • Were searching for a place to settle for the winter headquarters • Received help from Sacagawea and Nez Perce’ • They often wrote in journals about their discovery • Then on March 1806 went home as heroes
Pike’s ExpeditionWhy was Pike sent out? • To find the starting point of the Red River • To spy on the Spanish • To explore the newly purchased lands
Was Pike’s Exploration a Success? • Pike was captured and put in jail • Once released he went back finding that there were good business opportunities in the South West
