  2. Here I Am! • Oceans can be found all around the world • 75% of the planets surface is consumed by oceans • The four main oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic

  3. Food Chain

  4. I Wont Eat You, I’m a Producer! • Important Producers are Kelp, Seagrass, and Algae • Phytoplankton are the main photosynthesizers • Phytoplankton have chlorophyll to capture sunlight, and they use photosynthesis to turn it into chemical energy

  5. Primary Consumers • Zoo plankton- eat phytoplankton and are consumed by larger animals • Green sea turtles- herbivores, they have a vegetarian diet of sea grasses and algae • Manatees – eat a wide variety of vegetation • Fish- omnivores, they eat plants and smaller fish • Shrimp- omnivores, they eat plants and small animals

  6. Secondary Consumers Whale- eat krill, plankton, fish and squid Octopus- eat crabs, fish and turtles Dolphin-eat fish and squid

  7. Tertiary Consumers Shark- eat fish, squid, other sharks, and marine mammals ( like sea lions, seals, and small whales) Killer Whales- eat fish, squid, sharks, seals, sea turtles and octopi

  8. All Natural, Major Resources • Oceans provides food in the form of fish and shellfish • Transportation for ships • Oceans are mined for minerals (salt, sand, gravel, and some manganese, copper, nickel, iron, and cobalt can be found in the deep sea) and drilled for oil

  9. Environmental Concerns • Oil spills- happening in the gulf coast • POLLUTION-The Ocean is the worlds biggest dumping ground • Over fishing – will eventually lead to extinction

  10. Endangered Species The manatees are endangered because of pesticides and motor boats. A human is a predator to a manatee . Hunters kill manatees for meat, oil and blubber Coral Reefs- these organisms are declining due to the toxins humans are using to stun the fish
