Current situation • Lectures + computer assignments (modeling, algorithms, quantitative analysis using e.g. Excel or Delphi) • Issues: • students tend to be passive during lectures and very active during computer sessions • students pose considerably more questions about the theory during computer sessions than during lectures (then, I have to answer the same question may times) • students do not always prepare well for the computer sessions; then, they work on easy questions during the sessions and they have to work on the hard questions on their own (at home)
Goals • students start earlier studying the theory • students have a more active attitude during the lectures • students start earlier preparing for the computer assignments, so that we can help them with the hard questions during the supervised computer sessions • and: a higher passing percentage
Using notebooks • During (a part of) the lectures, students have to make (say) three small exercises in Excel; • Data and/or spreadsheet templates can be downloaded from TeleTop (should be accessible during the lectures) • We discuss what problems they encountered while making the exercise and how to solve these problems • As an example, a lecture may consist of three cycles: • 20 minutes theory • 5 minutes working on exercise • 5 minutes discussion
Possible drawbacks • dependency on computer network • additional time for lectures needed, so probably more intensive for lecturer • ??
Remark I have asked a year ago at the evaluation of REMM (response 19%): • Is this worthwhile to try? • 4x Good idea • 2x I haven’t got a laptop • 1x No (but why?) • 1x Two students can share a laptop • (as an alternative:) Is it a good idea to increase the number computer assignments at the expense of lectures? • 6x I don’t believe it would improve the course • 2x Sufficient assignments now • 1x No mandatory assignments • 1x More time for theory needed
