Importance • Literacy isn’t just reading – • \writing, speaking, and listening • Research shows that obtaining literacy skills are easier for some children, but if kids come to school with: • \recognition of letters, numbers, signs, and pictures • \exposure to spoken and written words • \ experience with conversation – speaking, listening, questioning • \exposure to variety of print material

  3. Parents’ role • You are the “introducer of books” according to Dr. Lesley Morrow of Rutgers University and past IRA president. • \How to hold book • \Left to right • \Turn pages

  4. Create the environment • \labels • \give everything a name • \point out signs in public • \keep variety of books, magazines, and print in the house • \re-read beloved stories

  5. How to: • Read daily! • Let your child “read” to you • Talk as you read – relate to the story or text • After reading – retell story

  6. Activities • Letter hunts • Fishing for letters or words • Sound games • Leave a “to do” list • Rhyming games • Sidewalk chalk • Shaving cream • Bathroom crayons
