Help solve the mystery of a disease outbreak in the school and save the community from its spread. Conduct research, diagnose the disease, find treatment, and write a report for the medical experts. Attend the press conference to find out if you saved the school!

  1. 7th Graders Save the School! A research project on Diseases & Illnesses Presenters: Kristi Colarusso Suzanne Muldowney Susannah Luttman

  2. Introduction:Help! Students and teachers within the school are becoming suddenly ill and no one knows why! The city has quarantined the school to ensure that this mystery disease does not spread into the community. The police are not allowing any doctors or nurses to enter the school building, so no one is able to diagnose the disease. They need your help! You are charged with this important mission: Figure out what disease has invaded the school! In order to do this, follow the steps on the following slides to complete your mission and save your school!

Task: Your Mission • In order to help save your school, your team will: • Research & record diseases and their symptoms using Internet websites • Use daily clues revealed by the school nurse and the teacher to eliminate diseases • Diagnose the disease based on your research • Research treatment for your diagnosed disease • Write a report for the medical experts describing your diagnosis • Attend a Press Conference to find out if you saved school!

  4. Process:Step 1 • Print out the disease chart • Look over the chart to see what type of information you are looking for. ILLNESS_Chart.rtf

  5. Step 2 • Use the first clue to begin your diagnosis • Watch for more clues around school as the disease spreads over the course of the next two weeks (You will not be able to complete this assignment in one day!) • Clue 1: First symptom - FATIGUE

  7. Investigation, cont. • As you complete your investigation, email your teacher or the school nurse to get more information or ask questions about the disease. • Watch for clues: New symptoms will come about during your investigation, which will help you eliminate potential diseases.

  8. Step 4 • Diagnose the disease • Based on your research, what disease has spread throughout the school? • Make sure have found specific research supporting your diagnosis • Identify 2 other diseases that you eliminated towards the end of your research

Step 6 • Write a Written Report which includes: • Diagnosis – identify the disease/illness • Justification – explain in detail how you came to your conclusion based on your research • Treatment – include possible treatment for your diagnosed disease • References (websites) - show where you got your information • Identify 2 other diseases that were the closest to the diagnosis; explain why you eliminated them

  11. Step 6, Cont. • Use Microsoft Word • Report must be 1-2 pages; double-spaced • Identify team members • Proofread your work! If the medical experts can not understand your diagnosis, they can not help save the school! • Check the rubric to make sure you have completed the assignment correctly

  14. Congratulations! You may have helped save your school from a potential epidemic. To find out if you correctly diagnosed the disease and the outcome of the medical mystery, attend the press conference in the 7th grade classroom on February 2, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. (Attendance is mandatory.) Conclusion:Did you save the school?
