Project of study of the electronic European Language Portfolio Socrates – Minerva 2003
Aims of the project The general aims of the project are the digitalization of an ELP (European Language Portfolio), as well as the study of its pedagogical implications; namely, we are creating an economic, multimedia, fit-for-purpose and easily deliverable digital ELP, and to promote its pedagogically correct use.
What is an ELP? The ELP is an initiative of the Council of Europe to support life-long language learning as a way of responding to economic, social, and cultural changes in Europe. • Its functions are twofold: • A reporting function • A pedagogical function
ELP paper versions The ELP exists in different versions in various countries and languages, but all the ELPs have the same structure and pursue the same objectives so that every ELP is an international comparable document.
ELP structure • Passport • Biography • Dossier ELP EU official web site: http://culture2.coe.int/portfolio
The digital ELP Even though an electronic version of the ELP is considered desirable by the Guide for developers(Schneider & Lenz, 2001:56), as far as we know, currently, no digital ELP has been validated yet.
Some practical issues... • It is freely accessible online and deliverable by e-mail • Easy to update • It records longitudinal processes • It allows for selective and customized access • It avoids graphical overload • It includes a multimedia Dossier
Pedagogical issues • We concentrated on the following key issues: • Student’s self-awareness development • Self-assessment tools and learner’s autonomy • Transparency of the recursiveness of the learning process • Multimedia evidence of language learning
Pedagogical issues The digital solution offers a less redundant and tighter contiguity among its digital sections, avoiding information overload of paper ELPs. Student’s self-awareness development
Pedagogical issues Through digitalisation, we try rewrite the descriptors in a synthetic, but complete, format. The syntactic combination focuses the learner’s attention on a reduced part of the global descriptor. Self-assessment tools and learner’s autonomy
Pedagogical issues The information of the digital ELP are stored in a portable data structure that keeps trace of student's modifications over time. Then, data are represented in a user-friendly graphic way to show the evolution of the language learning process. Transparency of the recursiveness of the learning process
Pedagogical issues The digital Dossier is an effective documentary tool because almost all the language skills can be fully demonstrated with multimedia samples. Multimedia evidence of language learning
