Marco Polo (1254-1324)
Marco Polo • Traveled to China in the late 1200s • Wrote The Travels of Marco Polo • His book shared his experiences in Asia and what he learned about Chinese culture and inventions • Historical Significance: He helped to open up the Eastern world to the West prompting future expeditions to Asia for goods to trade
Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) While many believed that the earth was flat, Columbus believed that the earth was round. He wanted to sail across the Atlantic to find Asia, rather than sail East At the conclusion of the Reconquista, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. funded Columbus’ voyage to the New World. Columbus sailed in 1492 on the ships the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.
The Voyage of Columbus • In 1492 Columbus set sail for the New World. • When he landed in San Salvador he claimed the land for Spain and made contact with the Native Americans. • Columbus was seen as a hero when he returned to Spain and was sent on more voyages to find riches and to convert the Native Americans to the Catholic faith. • Columbus did not meet with much success in his later voyages and later died in disgrace. • HS: Columbus’ exploration encouraged further exploration to the Americas.
Other Countries Explore England Italy The Italians also sent explorers to the New World An Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci is credited with proposing the idea that the land he reached was not in fact Asia but the world was bigger than they thought The name “America” came from his name HS ??? • King Henry VII sent John Cabot to explore west across the Atlantic • HS: King Henry wanted to help England compete for land and wealth • Cabot did not meet with much success but this opened up trans-Atlantic exploration for England
Ferdinand Magellan Magellan’s expedition was the first circumnavigation of the globe. What does circumnavigation mean? It’s LATIN “circum” –around and “navigo” –to sail Magellan did not survive the voyage HS: This voyage taught Europeans a great deal about the world and that the world could be circumnavigated

Conquistadors • What is a conquistador? • The word conquistador means “conqueror” • Hernando Cortes came to Mexico to search for gold in 1519. By 1521 he had conquered the Aztec people living in the area. • HS: They founded Mexico city, which became the capital of the Spanish empire in the Americas • Other conquistadors came to conquer land and to find riches, gold, and slaves.
Missionaries • Missionaries (religious teachers) were sent to the New World to convert the Native Americans to Christianity (specifically Catholicism). • Bartolomé de lasCasas was a Spanish priest who wrote about the sufferings of the Native Americans. HS: He is considered one of the first human rights advocates.
Missionaries: Questions to Consider • Infer: what do you think motivated the Spanish to send missionaries to the New World? • Perspective: If you were a Native American how do you think you would feel about foreign missionaries coming to your community? • How did life change for Native Americans with the arrival of missionaries? • What is the historical significance?
