My Lost Brother by Kyle McCowin
Have you ever noticed that some days last longer than others? I had a day like this once. the day I lost my brother.
It started on a cold night. My brother, Kyle, wanted to explore the forest. Just joking around, I told him, “If you’re brave enough, you can…”
He said nothing. he just went to bed and forgot about it…or so I thought. I woke up in the morning to find a letter on the window of the door.
It said, “I’ve gone to explore the forest, I’ll find some food for you, then I’ll show you who’s brave!” I couldn’t believe my eyes, I just stood there speechless.I said to myself, “He took me seriously!?”
Knowing Kyle couldn’t survive in the forest without my help, I went to look for him. As I was heading down the trail to the forest, my best friend was walking through my field.“Porky!” I screamed.
Porky had his Dog, Buddy with him. I waited a minute until he got closer, then I said, “Kyle went into the forest, and I need your help to get him out.”
“Ok, let me tie my dog up and we will go.”After he tied his dog up, we started walking down the trail.
But, as we got close to the entrance, we stopped and listened. “I hear something.” I told porky.“I think I hear someone talking,” Porky answered. We both walked up to the very edge together and said, “Well, here goes nothing!”
as we entered the forest, the whole world got silent. Then, Every step we took there would be a “SNAP and CRACK!!” This was all we heard. we looked up and saw massive trees swaying back and forth.
suddenly, in the distance, I heard a child. I wasn’t sure if it was Kyle.“ Kyle is that you?” I screamed.Porky spotted him. He was hugging a tall Oak tree and talking. “ Who is he talking to?” said Porky.“ I don’t know,” I said. “it seems like he’s talking to that tree.”as soon as I said that, Kyle looked up at the top of the tree and said, “what do you mean they’re here?”Porky and I ran up and grabbed him.“who were you talking to?” we said. “we heard you talking!”“ The trees,” Kyle said. “they helped me survive through the night.” I thought to myself, “if the trees really did help him, then thank you.”On our way home we laughed about the journey we had experienced, but every now and then we would look at the trees. it looked like they were laughing too.
