Response to Intervention What is RTI? Purpose
What is RTI anyway? • How a school responds to students who are not progressing. • Organized into three Tiers in order to provide intervention at various levels based upon need. • Intensity and nature of intervention adjusted as appropriate.
The purpose of RTI… • Identify students at risk for poor learning outcomes • Monitor student progress • Provide evidenced-based interventions • Identify students with learning or other disabilities
Tiers without Tears Screening The Tier Model State of the Schools Progress Monitoring
Screening Tools • PALS (K-3) • Given in Fall • Virginia SOL • 3rd grade results (for 4th graders) • 4th grade results (for 5th graders) We use standardized assessments that have validity and are usually those that are required by our school division.
Tier 1 – School-wide • All students in the school are included. • Basic instruction including differentiation. • Standard classroom interventions. • Approximately 80 % of school population will be successful in this environment.
Tier 2 • Students not passing SOL or PALS test • Small group instruction-no more than 5 students per group. • More intensive remediation with Reading Specialist (including guided reading instruction). • Approximately 15% of school population.
Tier 3 • Students scoring 200-300 on SOL; and lowest range on PALS. • Targeted instruction on a selected skill over a minimum of 4-6 weeks. • Groups of 1-3 students with Reading Specialist (working on same skill). • Progress monitored (minimum of weekly) to assess growth by Reading Specialist. • Data gathered must be measureable and graphed for evidence of growth over the period of intervention. • Progress monitored (monthly) by RTI team.
State of the Schools • Fairview 4th grade (VA SOL) • Fairview 5th grade (VA SOL) • Fairview 4th & 5th grade combined • PALS benchmarks
Tier 3 – Progress Monitoring • Choose a skill based on student need • Math • Behavior • Standard Direct Behavior Rating • Reading • Maze (interventioncentral.org) • Oral Reading Fluency • Letter Name Fluency • Progress Monitoring Tools • PALS Quick Checks (PALS website) • Benchmark Tests / Snapshots • AIMS Web • Interactive Achievement
