The History • Gay men have been marrying each other throughout history. In fact, ancient societies such as ancient Sparta and the Dorian Island of Thera officially recognized same sex relationships. • One specific group of people who practiced homosexuality were Celts.
U.S. History • 1924: The Society for Human Rights earliest know gay rights organization • 1962: Illinois decriminalized homosexual acts • 1973: Homosexuality is removed as a mental disorder • 1976: Harvey Milk is the 1st openly gay city commissioner • 1982: Wisconsin 1st state to outlaw discrimination based on orientation • 1993: Don’t ask don’t tell
U.S. History • 2000: Vermont 1st state to recognize civil unions • 2007: House of Representatives approve a bill ensuring equal rights for all sexual orientations in the work place
Gay Marriage in the World • Currently there are 11 countries where same-sex marriage is legal • The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Canada, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, Iceland, Argentina, and Uruguay
States • 12 states have recognized and legalized gay marriage including the District of Columbia • 30 states prohibit same-sex marriage in their constitutions • The Defense of Marriage Act of 1996 prevented the govt. from recognizing same sex-marriages
Statistics • California legalized gay marriage for 142 before prop. 8 passed • 18,000 same-sex couples in those got married • 49% of the nation is for same-sex marriage • 44% opposed • 7% undecided
Opposed • Is a sin (in most religions) • Can lead to polygamy • Confuse children about gender roles • Weaken the institution of marriage
For • Separation of church and state • Marriage benefits • It doesnot hurt anyone • Are no specific gender roles in American society • Increase in adoption
Age Gap • 44% of senior citizens support gay marriage • 81% of adults under 30 support gay marriage • Growing support with newer generations
What We Should Do • Pass legislation giving same-sex couples rights like married couples. • i.e. medical and tax • We should WAIT to pass gay marriage legislation • It should be a slow process so more people can start accepting it • Drastic changes in society hardly goes well (prohibition) • Younger generations will become 18 adding more support for gay rights
