  2. What is an adjective phrase? • Definition: An adjective phrase is a group of words that does the work of an adjective.

  3. STRUCTURES OF ADJECTIVE PHRASE • Pre-modifiers + adjective • Pre-modifier+ adjective + post-modifier.

  4. The adjective phrase has its head as an adjective,which may be preceded by pre-modifiers and followed by post-modifiers. • The structure of adjective phrase sometime only one adjective is also an adjective phrase.

  5. What is pre-modifier of adjective? • Adjectives are premodified chiefly by adverbs.Generally, the pre-modifier is an intensifier. This is a perfectly good conversation as far as I am concerned. That is a bit premature, isn’t it.

  6. What is post-modifier of adjective? • Adjectives are typically postmodified by prepositional phrases and various kinds of clauses. • Here are types of post-modifiers

  7. 1) Prepositional phrase I was afraid of him,didn’t really know him. 2) That-clause I expect you are glad you’re not a vegetarian

  8. 3) Wh-clause Yes you have to be careful what is available in what color. 4) To-infinitive clause If you have any questions then I would be happy to hear from you,but would you please allow me until 7 May.

  9. 5) Ing-participle clause But police were busy handling out letters about operation to residents and Supt Slater was happy with the result. 6) Comparative clause No I am sure it is easier than they say.

  11. FUNCTIONS OF ADJECTIVE PHRASE • The two major functions of adjective phrases are as pre-modifier of a noun and as subjective predicate.They are listed first below,followed by other functions

  12. 1) Pre-modifier of a noun Well it is a much less popular route. 2) Subjective predicate No I mean Auden was extraordinary ugly. 3)Objective predicate He is opening his mouth very wide just now

  13. 4) Post-modifier of a pronoun There would still be eyes waching and wondering from a distance but, briefly,there was no one close. 5) Post-modifier of noun To outsider London seems one of the most vibrant culture capital of the world,a city bright with theatres ballet galleries.

  14. 6) Nominal adjective Tonight I hope you’ll not mind if I eschew the academic. 7) Complement of a preposition Kaye doesn’t finish till late.
