A simple thought to reduce idling, is a savings of approximately $5,000 a year. The drivers took a pledge to stop idling for the health of the children, fuel economy, as well as the community and their own health. I am proud to say, the drivers combined reduced their idling by over 12 hours a day. Approximately every hour of idling uses a ½ gallon of fuel.
Studies conducted by the American School Bus Council indicate: • Over $40 million are saved annually by transporting our Utah School children on school buses. • Over 11 million gallons of fuel are saved each year, with over 86,000 fewer vehicles on the road. • With each bus replacing 36 vehicles, traffic congestion is reduced and harmful particulate matter is reduced by thousands of pounds! • Nationally for every 32,500 children transported, one life is saved a year. In Utah, that is at least lives each year.
School Bus Contractors • Give the drivers a Love the Bus logo item (t-shirt, pin, sticker, etc.) to wear while driving • Host a driver appreciation event in your terminal • Purchase ad space on a billboard near a high traffic area for a thank you • Issue a joint press release to the community about Love the Bus and asking the community to recognize school bus drivers they see • Work in conjunction with the school district
State Directors • Send a blast email to all local directors encouraging them to participate • Create a web page specific to your state's Love the Bus activities. • Coordinate a state official riding the school bus and notify media example: http://charlotte.news14.com/content/621907/campaign-encourages-more-students-to-board-buses • Personally get involved in a love the bus event and make some sort of official announcement, proclamation, etc. • Host a webinar or post a video explaining to districts what they can do and why it is important.
