Concussions In sports
My experience • 3 concussions • Post concussion syndrome • Migraine patient
What is a concussion? • Mild form of traumatic brain injury • Athletes are at strong risk for concussions
Simple vs. Complex • Simple Concussion- symptoms 7 to 10 days • Complex Concussion- persistent symptoms or prolonged cognitive impairment
Presence • The most common head injury in sports • 300,000 annually • 8 football-related deaths per year due to head injuries
Girls vs. Boys • Girls rates of concussion • Possibly due to biomechanical differences • More protective of female athletes
Treatment & Return to Play • No general agreement • Remains controversial • Protecting from further injury • Symptom-free
Reoccurrence • 3 to 6 times as likely to receive a second concussion • Cumulative effects • Memory and reaction time
Post Concussion Syndrome • Fatigue, headaches, equilibrium disturbances, & difficulty concentrating • Lasts for weeks or months
