  3. What is a concussion? • Mild form of traumatic brain injury • Athletes are at strong risk for concussions

  4. Simple vs. Complex • Simple Concussion- symptoms 7 to 10 days • Complex Concussion- persistent symptoms or prolonged cognitive impairment

  5. Presence • The most common head injury in sports • 300,000 annually • 8 football-related deaths per year due to head injuries

  6. Girls vs. Boys • Girls rates of concussion • Possibly due to biomechanical differences • More protective of female athletes

  7. Treatment & Return to Play • No general agreement • Remains controversial • Protecting from further injury • Symptom-free

  8. Reoccurrence • 3 to 6 times as likely to receive a second concussion • Cumulative effects • Memory and reaction time

  9. Post Concussion Syndrome • Fatigue, headaches, equilibrium disturbances, & difficulty concentrating • Lasts for weeks or months
